New Car Tax Rules..... Scam?
I know I won't be the only person to have noticed this and it's probably been discussed already on here, but I just needed to rant about the new car tax rules.....
I've been looking at the new regulations and it seems to me that the lovely little civil servant responsible for dreaming them up deserves a big pay rise.
As far as I can tell, tax is still issued and refunded on a WHOLE MONTH basis (please correct me if I'm wrong....)
So if I sell my car on let's say June 15th and it was taxed until end of July, I would only be able to reclaim the tax for July.
The new owner would have to tax the car immediately and if the rules are still the same they would have to pay for the whole of June.
That means the government will be getting tax for that vehicle from two different people for the same month (June).....?!!
Now multiply that scenario by the number of cars bought and sold on the second-hand market every day!!
I think I can imagine the scene in the tax office after that proposal was presented to the management.....

Or am I missing something?

I love how the word 'SCAM' is thrown about by all and sundry when they don't like something.
None of what you point out is hidden, it's been quite clearly displayed on the .gov website for a lot of months now.
Hardly a scam is it?0 -
No. Not a scam. You have only got whole months back for ever and a day and whilst the Government are making more from the current scheme it has been in operation since October 14, well publicised. Have you just returned from Mars?0

It is a scam, and a scandal. Only difference between this and a pyramid scheme is this is legal.
The government are manipulating the market for their own gain. It wouldn't be difficult to incorporate in to the system a greater degree of accuracy when refunds are being issued and when tax is taken out online, or even meeting the public in the middle just one of them.
The fact it's always been this way doesn't make it any less of a con on the people in this country!!0 -
Then I retract the word scam.....
How about rip-off?
Or bleeding liberty?
A rose by any other name and all that!
The fact remains that whilst it is easy enough for people to work out what's going on, it's not exactly a widely publicised characteristic....
I happen to be one of a relative minority who worked out that PPI wasn't worth the paper it was written on many years ago, but just because I figured it out I have no less sympathy for those that fell for it and no less animosity towards the banks....0 -

This only affected transactions where the seller reclaimed the tax. In most private sales the seller left the tax to run and used it as a selling feature....0 -
Easy answer is to flog your motor when it's beneficial to yourselves.:cool:0

All I'm really saying is that this is yet another example of an organisation (in this case the government) using a rule change that has been brought in for one or more good reasons as an opportunity to squeeze a little more out of Joe Public....
I for one feel that I contribute enough already :mad:0 -
Hold the front page everybody.
Oh, actually... Don't.0 -
Depending on when you sell/buy your next car will effect the actual loss you and the buyer will suffer. Sell when it effects you the least would be the best money saving advice.
Hardly the best money making scheme the goverment has thought up but as the Asda advert always says, "every little helps"."Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0 -
First, I believe the average VED is now less than £100. So the average "loss" of half a month's tax is about £4. Hardly worth all this excitement.
Second, every £4 collected by this alleged "scam" is £4 less to be collected in income tax etc. No-one is profiting.0
