TalkTalk letter (about exchange upgrade)

Hi - we have been on TalkTalk broadband for about a year. We have recently received a letter :
Dear Mr xxxx
To make sure your Broadband service is running on the very latest technology, we have installed new equipment in your local telephone exchange and we're ready to move your line on to it.

However our records show that your call plan has changed since you signed up for TalkTalk broadband. Before we are able to switch your line over to our new equipment, we need to change you back to your original call plan.

We hope that changing your call plan will not inconvenience you and to say thank you we'd like to give you a months line rental absolutely FREE, that's a saving of £10.50 off your TalkTalk bill!

Does this mean the broadband will be upgraded to 8mb? Will we be able to change our call plan when they have installed the new equipment?

Basically what they'll do is take your phone line completely off the BT network and onto their own network. So you could experience some down time in the line (wouldnt say any more than a few hours to a day). Whether you'll get 8mb is not guarenteed & will be determined by the length of your line.

I'm assuming that your exchange line is also with TalkTalK? If so, and you change your price plan you might find that this effectively ties you into them for a further 18 months.

I'd query this some more if I were you and get a written response that you will not be tied in this way.
  • Hi,

I think i can answer this one for you.

TalkTalk have sent the letter you recieved to 13,000 customers who did not automaticlly upgrade to the free service (unbundled) when the service was available in theyre area. This could be due to a system error or no capacity at the time.

You will be moved onto the up to 8mbit service, your actual speed will be determined by factors such as distance from the exchange, line quality, internal wiring and external interferance.

You will not be starting a new contract, your 18 month contract will continue without any extension.

During the upgrade you should experience no more than a 30 minute down time if all goes well. (The amount of time it takes for BT openreach to remove your cables from BT's equipment and move it to TalkTalks equipment).

This sounds about right. I recently asked them when the upgrade was going to happen because I had heard other people in my area were already on the 8mb broadband (and was originally told the upgrade would be at the beginning of this year) . Couldn't understand why they hadn't switched us when i've read that it costs them more to keep us on the BT system. Think I will double check with them about the contract being restarted though!

Do you know if we will be able to switch the call plan as we don't really use the international call allowance from the original call plan.
  • Hi,

No you will not be able to go to a lower talk plan until the 18 months has completed. I can confirm that the 18 month contract simply continues as previously as i work for talktalk ;-)
