    Well....
where to start, in a nutshell, we're selling to Russians as they're the only ones with any money right now.
But we've been fobbed off, given completion date after completion date which failed, the buyers agent has given us a large amount to secure the property, (in dribs & drabs a couple of thousand here, few thousand there so on and so forth) if they don't complete the sale, we keep the money & walk away, the last definite completion date we had ie 'book the flights - its happening', came & went we went out there anyway as the flights were non-refundable (on bank hol, half term so £600 ) we met with the agent & she gave us more money & said end of the month - definite.. blah blah,, so I guess we'll see in the next couple of weeks...
then theres the other bits etc & a portion of money that is withheld that you dont get back for up to 3 years.
.. Thats without starting on closing the bank account & transferring the money back to the UK.
Maybe its easier not selling to Russians, but as they're the only ones with any money, the Russian government are clearly hellbent on any money NOT leaving the country, its all a bit of an ordeal, this has been going on for a year now.
We're >this< close to pulling out & keeping their deposit, how long is it feasible to go on for!! All of this is on a bought outright unmortgaged property, I dread to think of the bigger nightmare if it was mortgaged.

Rich11, it could be back on the market if you're interested ;)

This, afaik, is only applicable to non-fiscal residents. If you are Spanish tax resident there is no retainer . We did not have one taken from our sale as we were both physically and fiscally resident when we sold.

There is legally no choice about this...if you have been in the country for a certain number of days you are automatically fiscally resident and should either submit a tax return, or, for those who don't have to pay any tax, get a certificate of fiscal residency. This is what we had. Our solicitor was delighted, he said it saved a lot of hassle :).

Our sale was actually straightforward, the only reason it took so long was that our deeds (escritura) were not properly registered by previous owners, and when this was discovered, we had to get it done before our buyer's bank would release his mortgage money. It took eight months and cost 8k euros (which we could set off against taxes).

It was lovely last week, hotter than Tenerife, apparently :)

Today, here in the West Midlands, it is cold and rainy, a typical English summer's day .

Remember going through benidorm on the coach on my way to pamplona for the bull run , seeing all those sky high apartments/hotels..not for me but each to their own, although I would still like to do the bull run even now , what a rush

The bull run is a disgraceful form of animal abuse masquerading as culture. The sooner it is banned, the better. These events are NOT one of Spain's better points.

Hi Tony. I was chatting to you on here back in April. Things have moved on a bit for me.
Sold my house in UK and bought a mobile home on a lovely site in Yorkshire as a UK base.
I have a 6 month rental arranged on a small villa and have the ferry booked for mid August. Bringing 2 dogs and a cat too, they just had their rabies shots. No problem finding a rental with the pets.
Plan is to try before buying, have been on holiday and visited friends in Alicante and Murcia area, but I guess actually living there is different.
Could you please advise on getting a car? I will need a small car, nowt too posh as dogs will be in. Is it possible to get a cheapish long term rental car?
I am thinking buying a 2nd hand car would be difficult as I don't have NIE yet and wouldn't understand the paperwork, tax, insurance etc.
I am soooooo excited. Can't wait to set off. And busy looking at the cheap properties for sale. Can't wait to go viewing some.
Looks awful hot out there right now. How do you cope? Dips in the pool? Siesta?

You do get used to the heat. The key is to adapt to the local timetable. Do your shopping early or late, stay out of the sun when it's strongest, drink LOTS of water, wear a hat and use sunscreen.

Do you get used to the heat of being in the eurozone and living in a Country with high unemployment and huge national debt?

I may buy a villa next year if I don't spend the tenner in my wallet on fags :p.

Hi good to hear from you again !! sounds like you have exciting times ahead !
sorry not too sure about hiring a car long term , as we own our own !

Yes you would need an nie and I think you might need a padron ( a piece of paper from your town hall showing you actually live there )

If you like the Alicante area I do nkow where there are some good value properties , recently seen a detached house with 4 beds 3 baths pool 2800m plot , garage for 130.000€ just needs a bit of tidying up and updating , good area close to Alicante city , Airport , and short drive to fantastic beaches

Good idea to buy the mobile home as a base , we used to have one in the UK and we loved it !

Yes its super hot here now , air con is great for cooling down and of course the pool and beer !!

    Cheers Tony

    Good luck with the move
