As a rule of thumb these are linked to a specific loyalty card so won't work for you but is it theft - not in the slightest

My friend and I sometimes combine our shopping to take advantage of, say, a £4 off £40 spend.

Recently I went to ditch some litter from a Tesco trolley and realised it was a Sainsbury's voucher - spend so much on toiletries and get 10p off petrol. I bought the toiletries and got £7.20 off my petrol.

Lots of people can't be bothered with vouchers or don't want the products, so why waste them? I reckon that, when people leave vouchers at the checkout they really don't care whether anyone picks them up and uses them.

I've never found that vouchers were tied to individual loyalty cards, except, I think, Morrison's £5 Match and More vouchers.

This would have been more easily answered in a straight poll.

If it is linked to their loyalty card then you can't use it. But otherwise you are just picking up litter so its not theft!
  • If you don't pick it up, someone else will. But if you want to be really virtuous, hand it in at your local Police Station in case the 'owner' comes to claim it. (Try and keep a straight face.) You can come back for it in a month. It will still be there. Many people just don't care about these coupons.

probably would be out of date by then...

If you do this on a regular basis maybe next time you could alert the person to check they didn't want it.

Normally you use this voucher with your loyalty card - so it may not work when you use it. I don't think it is theft however.

    Which supermarket was it?

Regards Sainsburys, if it's a brand match coupon, they are issued regardless if the customer swiped a Nectar card or not. Those that say £3 off £20, they have the last 5 or 6 numbers and are linked to that card.

Tesco's price match are issued with or without clubcard.

The self scan cashiers should rip up any left vouchers.

You can do it in WH Smith, just look around the robot tills - you may find a discarded £5 off £20 voucher.
  • I think your boyfriend's being a bit too fastidious. Just spend the voucher and be happy. If he feels he can't live with the guilt, you might like to consider your options.
