Oman Air cancelled flight

We were supposed to fly to Zanzibar with Oman Air. The flight was from Heathrow to Muscat and then from Muscat to Zanzibar.
The flight from Muscat was cancelled they said due to unrest in the Yemen and we ended up stuck in Muscat for nearly 2 days. They did put us up in a third rate hotel on the outskirts of the town, but it was 36 hours later that they put us on a flight to Zanzibar. By then we had lost our connecting flight for our safari and there were no more flights that day so we had to charter a plane. We are out of pocket because of the charter flight and we have lost 2 days of out holiday. Do we have a claim against Oman Air?

I would expect though that a delay on a non-EU airline for a flight fully outside the EU for what they will class as Extraordinary circumstances that EU261 does not apply in your situation
Airlines are also not responsible for any consequential losses
Probably best trying to recover your losses from your travel insurance
