smaller bathroom or bedroom?

Moved into our lovey new home last weekend and are thrilled with it, now just working out all the things we want to improve, upgrade etc.

The one thing we've agreed is that the bathroom is relatively small compared to rest of house, its pretty poorly laid out too. The second bedroom has built in wardrobes that back on to the bathroom which gives an option of losing the built in wardrobes and extending the bathroom back about 2.5ft and then remodeling. This means losing a bit of bedroom space obviously which is what we are weighing up.

The second bedroom is a smidge under 10 x 10 plus the wardrobes and we have our king bed and drawers in there while we decorate the master bedroom and there's still walking around room. I think that it will still be a big enough room if we lost the built in space, we'd like to start a family next year so our LO would go in that room so no huge amounts of furniture for the foreseeable future. Our third bedroom is also not far off 10 x 10 so there are no tiny box rooms.

Would you rather keep the built in wardrobes or have a bigger bathroom? The bathroom really is shuffle in and out territory, no storage space at the moment.

Very happily married on 10th April 2013 :D

If you would like the extra space then yes lose the wardrobes. But remember you will still need to fit a wardrobe in somewhere. Are the wardrobes the whole wall long, like 10'? Perhaps you could stagger the wall so you get an extra bit in the bathroom but still have a wardrobe in an alcove?

What size is the bathroom? can you sketch a picture of it and link it on dropbox (or another pic hosting site)

I would rather keep the larger bedroom IF and only if the bathroom could be redesigned to use space better.

Bathroom! 2nd and 3rd bedrooms need not be big unless they're full-time adult rooms, whereas the bathroom is for everyone, day and night.

If you can make enough space to have a separate bath and shower in there, nicely tiled, you'll be surprised how much nicer that makes your life ;-)

I think it depends a lot on what you intend to do with the extra space in the bathroom. If you feel it'll allow you to put in something you really want/need, like a tub in the space of a shower cubicle or an additional sink for spouse or kids, I'd keep the space in the bedroom.

Speaking as someone who always has 'sense of space' at the top of their list for property, superfluous space in a bathroom is pretty pointless IMO. My house has a bathroom about 9x9, and even though I loved the idea when I bought the place, I find it's completely unappreciated, and have in practice been just as satisfied with bathrooms half the size or less in the past. I find the bathroom is the one room in the house where people only ever go to do very specific things, and once they've done those things they leave immediately. Even if you're soaking in the tub, you've probably either got your eyes closed or are staring at the ceiling, right? Whereas in a second bedroom, you might really appreciate the extra space, for storage or just for space, depending on what the room ends up getting used as in the future.

tl;dr: One vote for bigger bedroom, smaller bathroom here! :)

I would always prefer storage space over a large bathroom

Living space - Bedroom, over bathroom.

When it comes to selling a room of 10x10 is a pretty small double. work on the bathroom layout and go for a quality finish rather than losing space from the bedroom.

Depends how small the bathroom is.

We have a family bathroom which is only 7 ft x 6 ft 3 in and its perfectly big enough for us.

I would choose a bigger bedroom over bathroom.
  • I'd definitely try to rearrange the layout and make better use of the space before considering losing space off a bedroom.

If you can fit a full size bath in there, it doesn't need to be any bigger. Walls can be used to create storage space, I prefer not to have anything on the floor in a bathroom anyway. As for a separate shower, they're lovely but you can still fit a really nice one over a bath and it won't make that much difference to your use of it or the value of the place.

Having lived in several victorian terraces where the bathroom has been a converted double bedroom, i think large bathrooms are a total waste of space, unless you have specific requirements.
