Onecall insurance should not call

Onecall insurance, seemed to have great feedback, until you want to add yours and realise its selected by the company itself. Hmmm :-\ Mine would be 1* and that would be generous.

Took out car insurance in September, drove around happily till NCD was an issue, they said they had not received my last insurance company's details.
So l phoned them and told them all the information again. Drove around for another month, till letter saying cancelling my insurance as still no proof of NCD. This time l spent 30 mins on my mobile to one call. Whilst customer services called my old insurance whilst l held on the line. ££££ l was told all confirmed, everything was good. I would not hear anything further. In truth l didnt, but l wish they did because they just cancelled it. It took them another month to refund a third of the money to a joint bank account, which is how l found out l had been driving uninsured. =-O l could have lost my car, got 8 points on my license, or worse had a terrible accident.

I have used my friends id because even now worried about the police.

  • It is true that the police trawl forums looking for uninsured drivers and people doing wrong.

I mean, I'm not even a real captain! But don't tell anybody.

    OK I confess, I'm not really a Donkey :(

Seriously though, it sounds like that is worth a complaint to the ombudsman if you've exhausted there complaints procedure.

If an insurer cancels your policy, they are supposed to tell you in writing before doing it. It should not be possible to have a policy cancelled without you knowing it.

    It's definitely worth a complaint.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

You do look to have grounds for complaining abut the way they administered the cancellation.

But as the reason for cancelling is presumably unfounded and you do have the NCD you told them you had then you do need to complain on the bigger (for you!) issue of them cancelling unfairly.

Now you have a cancelled contract on your record for life (which you must disclose to all other motor insurers when you try for quotes - and often other insurers as well ask if you ever had any policy cancelled) expect problems and extra expense taking out cover.

Most online and off the peg insurers refuse to quote if you have a cancelled contract in your history.

Send a formal complaint about the wrongful cancellation and ask them to reinstate the policy and remove the cancellation from your record and compensate you for any extra expense this cancellation has put you to in organising alternative cover.

If you are unhappy with their reply or they ignore your complaint for 8 weeks you can escalate it to the FOS for their adjudication at no cost to you

or worse had a terrible accident.

How does being uninsured make you more likely to have an accident?
  • I changed my car in March and find One Call on price comparison site - they were not the cheapest but appeared to offer the best deal. I started the policy and set up payments. I also submitted my old Policy Schedule that listed my No Claims Discount specifically to their online portal. Admittedly they sent me 2 reminder letters, but there was a lot going on at the time and I didn't read them in time. The cancelled my policy and took £180 in cancellation fees! My annual policy was only £350! Total and utter scam, DO NOT USE THEM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!

Sounds a little suspect to me. You can't verify NCD over the phone, you have to send them a document to prove the NCD.

Some companies will ring each other, but others expect you to do the leg work.

I can also vouch for One Call being utterly useless. Basically their business model involves someone creating a whole library of letter templates and sending them all out to you rather than being an Insurer/Broker and concentrating on the day job.

In my case I arranged insurance for my Uncle. Sent them the proof of NCD. Letters from them. Sent them NCD copy by email a few more times. Bam! Letter in post saying Policy was cancelled. No 7 days notice. Fine Richardheads have cancelled it. So we insured elsewhere. Then they send a letter claiming we have dual insurance! Err. Yes. You. Cancelled. The. Policy.

Complaint and the even more absurd templates appear. They refuse to refund premium from the date THEY cancelled it. I ask for a decision letter so I can go to the FOS and they back down.

Thing is I see One Call on the comparison quotes when I take out insurance myself or for my extended family. Whilst they are at the cheap they send a shiver down my spine over how appalling they are.

  • I have been with them for 2 years thought they were ok but I'd never needed them for anything until I changed my car 3 months ago then I realised how bad they were! For my new car was gonna cost me extra £120 I did think it would be more as the car was newer and more valuable. Apparently because I'd took out a 3 year fixed price they were unable to add this extra amount to my direct debit and I would have to phone up every month for next 3 months and pay it over phone in 3 interest free instalments fine I thought not realising that each time I phoned I was charged an extra £1 for each transaction for using a debit card! They would write to me every month telling me when payment was due on the last months payment the letter arrived while I was away on holiday (I only went on holiday for 7 days) so the day I came back I phoned and made the payment the next day I got a letter stating my insurance had been cancelled for non payment I have been trying to phone them for 2 days keeps saying office closed and to use live chat on Internet which is not there! I am fuming to say the least mainly because I would have had none of this if they'd have just added it to my direct debit! I am still trying to contact them today but it states office closed although opening hours state till 9pm! Don't use this company I will be leaving them once renewal due!
