I've edited this post to clarify that this is just the gas bill, not gas and electricity

I'm hoping there is an error somewhere!

We are with E'on and have just received our second bill based on them doing a reading, the first was based on their estimation

They estimated we would use 327 units up until January.

We have just had actual bill from January until April and it is saying we've used 1150 units - or 12838 KWH which seems to be very high to me?

We are just 2 adults living in a very small 2 bed end of terrace house and out at work all day.

We are on E'ons Fixed 1 year V10 deal and the bill has come in at £492 for the quarter £514 with the VAT.

Does this seem correct or could we potentially have a problem seeing as the meter has been newly fitted?!

Not sure exactly how new meters work. But for comparison I thought I will give our usage. We are with EON on the fixed tariff and just yesterday I submitted the meter readings. We have used around 300ish units for a month on Electricity and 50 on Gas. We are 3 adults and 1 child in a 2 bed terraced house. There is someone at home all the time and we usually don't worry too much about usage (which we should be). Any way compared to us it seems a bit high.

That suggests you have 'only' used 738 meter units this quarter, not 1150. But 16,500 kWh over winter is quite high for a small home - but not impossibly so.

You'll have to start reading your meter day to day or week to week now to see how much your home uses. (If it's still cold where you are - could be more awkward if you're in the heatwave.)

Thanks babyangel, compared to your 50 units for gas ours really does seem quite high (the info I posted was for gas only not combined) !

    Hi Nada666

    Thanks for your response

I'm just looking at previous gas bill from E'on, they were estimating we should have used 249 units - judging they get their information based on averages and we are most likely an average (or perhaps even below average usage couple) I wouldn't expect it to be four times higher?! :(

The average household gas consumption for the whole year is 13500 kWh, so you are on the high side.

Regarding the cost, it sounds about right on that tariff, but a wise MSE'er should be able to buy the 13500kWh for a whole year for about £500 (inc VAT)

Use a comparison site to find the best deal for you. That may be separate suppliers ;)

Thanks footyguy - but it wasn't me that said we didn't worry about usage that was someone else's comment !

    Hiya jolester,

Can I just ask a couple of questions to make sure I've got this right please :o

You say this is the second bill from us, was the first charged to an estimated meter read or an accurate read that you gave us?

It sounds from what you've said that is was estimated, this makes me think the first bill was estimated to low, so now we've billed up to date it's caused a bit of a 'catch up' bill.

Are your start readings with us correct, do they match what you gave us?

Have a look at the total amount of units used since the account started up to the accurate read, remember though with the gas it will be a larger proportion over the winter months.

Do you have an online account? It's a good idea as you can pop your reads on and produce bills and balances when you like and loads of other stuff.

Also pop your details in to a comparison site, see how things look from there.

Thank you and sorry if I've got the wrong end of the stick.

    Helena :)

    Hi Helena,

When we moved into the property it was on a prepayment meter, we changed it to a billing account in October, if I send you the figures off the bills would it help at all?

I have just set up an online account with you today so I could try and make sense of the units compared to previous.

I just can't believe we have used almost an average yearly households worth of gas in three months!

    Thanks for your help
