Perhaps he wants to surprise her.0 -

I think this makes very good sense.
I would have hated for my OH to spend £1k - £2k on a ring that is intended to be worn every day without asking me for my preference.
Re the 4 rings, I can't personally see any difference between 1 & 2.
I'm not that keen on claw-set rings anyway.
ETA: I have a ring very much like the one in the link from LilElvis but with a thinner band. It looks very nice with my wedding ring, although it isn't the diamond solitaire we originally picked.
I wear a shed-load of different rings with my wedding ring, varies between ruby, emerald, sapphire, tanzanite, diamond - it depends what I'm wearing and how I feel.0 -
I went for claws. My jeweller said he thinks its a shame when people go for a bezel unless they need more protection ie. in their line of work. We looked at some and I just didn't like the look of them. So an opinion to contrast some of the others!
I do like the look of six claws but would worry it would overwhelm the stone. With Blue Nile you can't see the size to decide. For yours I would be more inclined to go four claw.0 -

Sometimes strangers can be good sounding boards to ensure you've thought of everything.
There is very little "facts" on this part of the forum, if getting opinion from strangers was pointless you may as well close down this section and a few others.0 -

What's wrong with getting opinions and suggestions from others? It would be a fairly reasonable assumption that most men don't know a lot about jewellery so would require some guidance. It's also possible that the OP has asked his partner's friends opinions, or may not want to in case they accidentally blab and spoil the surprise.
I actually designed my own ring and my (now) husband would never have risked choosing one for me, particularly as we spent multiple times the OPs current budget. The only time he ever asked someone else's opinion (his sister, also my friend) they got it spot on - except they chose a diamond pendant I had purchased for myself a couple of weeks before.0 -

Thank heavens! After the other thread re engagement rings I was beginning to think that I was the only poster who really loves jewellery! Fortunately for our bank account I don't live close to that jeweller now as I can never resist his work - I even bought a diamond necklace the day I went to collect my engagement ring as I have zero self control when I step through their door.0 -
What's wrong with getting opinions and suggestions from others?
Other people's opinions and suggestions can be useful. However, engagement rings are something that people have so many different opinions on. I have a claw setting and love it, you don't and love your ring. Someone else didn't like a claw as it got caught on things, I've never had that. I have 3 stones (a diamond and 2 smaller saphires), other people just want the diamond. I went for a budget higher than OPs, others would be horrified by spending that much on jewellery rather than a new car. I chose my diamond before the setting for it. Others decide what style of ring they want and don't consider the diamond in too much detail. Have you ever met anyone who didn't like their engagement ring? everyone has their own opinion on the perfect ring.
The OP said on his other thread that his gf reads these forums so it might be best to not ask for too much advice. If she's reading she'll know the budget and where the ring is from, he won't want to her know what it's going to look like too!0 -
Depends on how big the stone is going to be. The pictures are lovely but the stone size will make a difference0

Thanks for all your suggestions - keep them coming,
I know I should ask her style but then it would not be a suprise. I do value the opinions of all you 'strangers' as it a suprise - im not telling anyone I know.
It would be around a .5 crt diamond if thats any help. Do you think a 6 claw would overpower it?0
