Or just sit and wait to see what the outcome of their investigation is?
Can only really be two alternatives you would think?
- They tell you and prove what it's about, meaning you can deny/challenge it?
or
- They admit they have to **** off and leave you alone.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Dear Mackle,
I write in reference to your recent correspondence regarding the above matter.
I understand that you are unhappy as you wrote to Wescot requesting proof that you were liable for this account; however, you state that we have continued to make demands for payments and phish for personal details. You state that this has caused you considerable distress and you have requested compensation for this.
All the information supplied from our client is used by us to contact relevant parties. Our client can request us to trace someone straight away or if we do not receive contact after our usual attempts, we complete a tracing process; part of this involves searching publically available information. We often use Credit Reference Agencies to search for the data they hold and provide us with information on the whereabouts of the person we need to contact; in this case we used Experian. A link held by Experian suggests that you are the person we have been instructed to contact.
Regrettably, as you have not confirmed your previous address history, I am unable to confirm or deny that we have contacted the correct Mackle so I am therefore unable to discuss this matter with you due to the remit of the data protection act.
I would like to assure you that Wescot is an active member of the Credit Services Association and ensure that we comply with all aspects of the CSA code of conduct and all consumer credit rules and regulations. Upon receipt of your first contact, Wescots standard contact was suspended and has remained so since this date.
Taking the above in to consideration, and as you have not confirmed your previous address, I am unable to uphold your complaint against Wescot as we have been unable to confirm or deny that you are the correct individual. Therefore, I am unable to offer any compensation in this instance.
However, I can confirm that our records have now been amended; therefore you should not receive any further letters from Wescot in respect of this matter. I would like to assure you that Wescot has not registered any negative information against your name or address in respect of this matter with credit reference agencies and your credit status remains unchanged by our actions.0 -
However, soon afterwards a letter from a different company (Idem Servicing) with the exact same figure.
Dear Mackle,
We have been instructed to make contact with you to agree a solution regarding your outstanding balance.
The balance is now due so please contact us to discuss the options available to you based on your personal circumstances.
It is essential that you contact us within seven days of the date of this letter to resolve this matter and prevent further recovery action.
Please contact our office where our experienced team will be happy to help you.
I still have no idea what this is about, so I guess it's a ProveIt letter again to request more information?0 -

Have another look at your credit expert report (you said earlier that you got one). That is Experian. Is there a linked address there that is nothing to do with you?
Idem is the company who claim you owe them money. Now they have decided to harass you direct rather than use the monkeys at Wescot. They might actually tell you what this is. Or rather what it was. It appears they have bought a debt for maybe £1.70 and want to find someone to attach it to!0 -
I am finally getting somewhere.
I've received a letter back from Idem that says that they bought a debt that was defaulted earlier this year. This default is now showing up on my credit rating, and has pushed my rating from a high good to a low fair.
I've gone through my credit history, and the account was closed last summer, as there was nothing owing on it.
Very very confused. I've not received any correspondence from the original Store card company, but I have received copies of letters sent by Idem that they had sent to an address that I haven't lived at since 2003.0 -
Are you positive the account had nothing owing ?
How much are they chasing you for ?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Slightly shy of £200.
I've gone through my credit history and can see that it was settled last summer, with a balance of 0. The account was closed when I called them and said I did not need this account anymore.0 -
Send them a SAR Demand and see what the paperwork says about the account status.
Make sure you demand they provide all documentation and letters sent out relating to the account and concordance with any third party they hold about the account.I do Contracts, all day every day.0
