Yeah, spot on, OP - pedestrians are responsible for the deaths on our roads. Jesus wept.
You know who's actually responsible? Drivers.
Speeding is still socially acceptable. Texting/checking your makeup in the mirror/driving with coffee or food in your hands/fiddling in your handbag which is on the passenger seat.
I see it all, every single day.
Enforcement is woefully inadequate.darwin-rover wrote: »Not true.
Pedestrians have priority whatever direction the car is coming.

This is correct. Pedestrians have priority over other road users. As they should, being the most vulnerable of all.
Drivers - will it kill you to let a pedestrian cross a side street that you want to turn into? Are you more bothered about holding up your fellow motorists than allowing someone to cross the road? What is it, a three-second delay???
Oh yeah, and whoever mentioned indicators, they seem to be optional on many cars these days. Some drivers seem not to know that they exist.
Don't even get me started on roundabouts.
I'll balance the above by saying that there are still many careful, considerate drivers on the roads.Get to 119lbs! 1/2/09: 135.6lbs 1/5/11: 145.8lbs 30/3/13 150lbs 22/2/14 137lbs 2/6/14 128lbs 29/8/14 124lbs 2/6/17 126lbs

Too many foreigners who drive on the other side of the road, left-hand drive vehicles etc. Roundabouts are very rare in other european countries so they don't have the experience. Cannot read signs due to language etc.
They should be made to take a driving test once they come to the UK.
Commonsense really !!0 -
when I was at school (a long time age ) I was taught dont step into the road if cars are coming .I still adhere with this .I don't attempt to cross if cars are coming regardless of who has right of way .
Having said that one man decided to cross the road in front of me when I was doing my driving test .Why anyone would step out in front of a learner driver is a mystery to me."Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many"0 -

Maybe if pedestrians werent walking on the road they wouldnt get hit?
The amount of times i see people just step out without looking, or from between cars or walk across a main street diagonally with their head down, etc, etc.
Maybe there needs to be some ownership there, rather than blame some poor sod in the car if someone gets clipped.0 -

I didn't say it was just the fault of pedestrians..... It's both parties..... and this attitude of "Pedestrians have priority over other road users" is exactly one of the problems. Yes, they have priority if they have started to cross a junction prior to the car coming to the junction but NOT if the car has started turning in.... Are you suggesting cars should just stop on roads at the whim of a pedestrian who fancies crossing the road wherever they fancy? Is that not what the numerous types of crossings are for?0 -

I'd a guy in lurgan on saturday morning who decided he was going to walk diagonally across the main road through the town, within 20 paces of the pedestrian crossing and of course he did the "ostrich" routine of keeping his head down and not looking at the traffic like that was in some way going to protect him from getting milled.
but of course it would have been my fault if i'd clipped him.0 -

Yes. You're supposed to be ready for that when you're driving through a town. Same as you're supposed to be ready for the vehicle in front to stop suddenly etc.“What means that trump?” Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare0 -

Absolutely. And i was hence he didnt get driven down by me or the other cars that were forced to take evasive action.
But again, wheres the ownership on the pedestrian to be more aware / concious of their surroundings and to use the facilities provided (at taxpayers cost) to ensure they can cross a busy road safely?0
