Withdrawing money with expired bank card?

Options
Is it likely I'd be able to withdraw money with my old, expired / out of date bank card from within a branch and with my passport and drivers license to prove it's me? It's an unusual situation but I assume others must have tried in the past.

I've been abroad down under for 3 years and my current card would be somewhere amongst a stack of 3 years of unopened mail at a friend's place.

I'll pick my current card up in the weeks after getting back but I need to withdraw money from that account when I fly back in a few days to buy a train ticket from London to Bristol. Otherwise I'll be stranded in London with no money or way to travel which would be problematic...

If the account has not been used in three years it is probably inactive and the funds may be frozen.

I wouldn't rely on getting cash out for something so essential the same day.

On the positive side any bureau de change at the airport will change your dollars for you - or if you have a "down under" bank account with a visa symbol on it you could use that. Coach Heathrow to Bristol is cheaper than train and direct and you can buy and print out National Express tickets on line before you fly.

The account has had occasional usage so it wouldn't be frozen.

I don't have any money left with which I could buy the tickets with unfortunately. A friend is lending me a large amount of money to cover me for a while when I get back (I'll be homeless and job-hunting) but that'll be transferred to my UK account.

Thanks for suggesting National Express, I wasn't sure if could use them as I'll have a bicycle and lots of luggage with me but looking online it looks like I can, just having to pay a bit extra.

I've managed to withdraw cash in branch on a couple of occasions. either with ID or by identifying a couple of digits from my PIN. I suspect it will depend on the bank and branch. It may be best to phone in advance if at all possible.

I'd leave the old card out of the equation, just walk in, quote the account number and sort code, and show ID. At the same time, change your address and order a new card.
