Is it really cruel?

I don't understand how people can say it's better to euthanise than let a cat live with 3 legs! If it was any of mine (or any cat for that matter) I know what I would do

Cats are agile creatures that adapt. Of course with 3 legs they are not going to be as agile as on 4 legs. front leg amputations can be more difficult for cats, but they cope well, although they may need to be mainly indoor cats after.

Your sisters cat may have had other issues, it doesn't necessarily mean every cat with 3legs is in pain.

So no I don't think it's cruel to give the cat the chance to live with 3 legs.

    be advised by the vet.

If you didn't see this before- watch how a puppy survived and thrived with 3 legs

I'm not sure about cats but when my dog broke a foot he used only 3 legs for a few weeks and adapted very quickly to it, none of us are vets though and they will know the best option for you and your cat so just try to get a good nights sleep and take tomorrow as it comes, good luck.
  • Well, for me, it's not a binary decision. You can amputate first, and if the cat was suffering, you could still make the call to ease it's suffering.

I know if someone gave me the choice of removing a limb or being euthenized, I'd try the limb first!

Sorry if that sounds like a cold way of looking at it, but if you take emotion out of it, it's quite a straight forward decision.

How did it go at the vets last night Merlin?
  • I think you can aks an advice from another vet, and he can approve the suggestion of the vet, or advice you some better way, but I've never realized people who put down their pets. We can't determine fates of another creatures.

His having surgery tomorrow to remove part of his paw that's gone dead.
Lucky it hadn't spread up his leg. Friday cost £53, today £24 and tomorrow £150 ish. Good thing mum has a credit card.
  • Don't worry, the cat will pay you back in dead mice over the years I'm sure.

I'm certain that's why mine still do it.

Met a three legged black cat last night when walking up to the local Tesco for milk.

Well, when I say met, it saw me about 20yds off and ran up for a fuss. So obviously a very happy and outgoing cat.

Have it done. They cope fine.
