I wonder what happens with things like this and the bank.
If the guy pulls all the money out, PayPal chase him, but how far does that really go?
I wonder if PayPal then charge his account, but he complains to the bank saying it's fraudulent and the money is then returned to his account?

The real Gary is a pensioner in a nice detached house. His details have been stolen and the account set up in his name. Sell a handful of DVDs for a few months, limits are raised and hey presto you can list and cream til the cows come home.

The last dateable feedback is 2 weeks ago. If that is only just rolling in AND he's still selling, there's a tidy pile of cash somewhere. The Ps boards estimate it at 50K so I wasn't far out, the original guy who started the thread is a mega DVD seller and knows his game. He spotted this a week ago - and let eBay know. Go figure.
  • He is a Director of at least 2 active companies (http://companycheck.co.uk/director/903162534) .

I see from the feedback that at least one delivered DVD was a copy and wonder if Gary has been daft enough to sign up for one of those hooky "dropship" scams where you front on ebay , notify the hookie dealer about sales and get a cut of the proceeds.

Obviously, the scamsters do not care if they do not send out all DVDs and, from the feedback, it looks as if they are sending out a certain percentage. Let's be frank, buyers are quicker to leave bad feedback when they have lost their money, than to leave good when they actually get the DVD....

If matey has noting to do with this, it's a bit rash posting his details on here?

  • Could be a good seller who died or had a heart attack. It's exactly what would happen to the feedback where it was a one man operation with no-one else having much input into the business.

  • "Matey's" details are clearly detailed in his long feedback list:-

    http://feedback.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&ftab=AllFeedback&userid=garr_ryde&iid=-1&de=off&interval=0&items=200

Feedback by "a***l" names him and gives address.....

Perhaps this thread should never have been started.

However, eBay seem to have taken action - no items currently listed for sale...

The 'name' on the account isn't the account users real details, they've plucked some poor chap out of nowhere. I started the thread to illustrate how these scams are allowed to run for so long as Ebay close at weekends.

I didn't put up his details and I wouldn't expect anyone else to.

So how does it all work, you hijack an account, sell a bit and deliver to keep paypal happy, and then do £50k in a week and they'll not smell a rat??

I imagine the scumbags keep trying various accounts and occasionally hit on one that slips through the net. If they're paying by Paypal, it's usually Ebay that ends up losing the money.

It throws up an interesting scenario post split, currently, if the Paypal accounts are wiped out, Ebay takes the hit. When they are two separate companies there will be a lot of confusion as to who will be responsible for the lost money.

No you steal the ID Brooker Dave for example. As you can see he is a limited company, you have all his details.

Then you open the Paypal account & Ebay account and set up the business. DVD's have a strict control on Ebay and you have to supply all sorts of paperwork, above normal requirements.

When the account has been ticking along selling £4-5 DVDs for a while and your customers look happy, wait for a long bank holiday weekend (Easter is our longest unless Christmas falls on a Sunday).

Up your selling to 100 x what you had listed (as your account is now in good standing and the Ebay bods are all having an nice Guinness in Dublin for the long weekend.

You've then got about a week to 10 days where the buyers will be patient, because it's been a bank holiday double, but the 100 x normal income stream comes in. The first negs and cases start to appear, get all the money out daily or even several times a day……that's how they do it.

Now, this is normally done in silence, i.e. no one has seen it. But even on this occasion it was posted on the boards on a Friday evening. Nothing was done by Ebay, despite the board moderators changing some posts within the thread, not one single Ebay member of staff was around or took note.

Now the feedback is so horrendous that the account should be wiped. The poor bloke Brooker Dave who has his name against it is probably not even an ebay account holder - if you see what I mean - and is oblivious to the vultures who are suggesting finding him and causing harm over £4.

You'd think the big problem would be the bank account and the verification?
