You're right, dogs aren't ('just' - interesting addition there) material possessions, they're living things - if you agree, then why are you charging £350 per puppy ? and why are you only concerned that this person won't look after it now they didn't pay you ?

Write the money off and stop selling dogs for profit, well stop selling dogs completely, local (non RSPCA) rescue centres are full of them and they check someone's suitability BEFORE they hand the dog over.

Ignore this advice, it's ridiculous. The simple fact is you are selling dogs as a commodity, and require payment. Whether this poster agrees with the market as a whole is irrelevant to the fact your actions are lawful and a legally binding contract entered in to with the chap.

But I do agree it would be a bit rich to now have concerns over the dogs welfare.

I had a litter of puppies who went to their new homes 6 months ago. Everyone paid for their pups in cash with the exception of one person. He told me he was a dog handler in the army and that the dog would be trained in the army and could he pay with an army cheque. I naively agreed. The cheque was returned to me by the bank as unpaid. I have the lads address (if its genuine), his phone number and he is a 'friend' on facebook. I speak to him and he tells me he will pay but never does. It has been going on for months now. If he lived near enough I would have gone round and taken the pup by now, but he is a 4 hour drive away. Its not a large amount of money only £350 but its the principle and also I worry about the welfare of the pup as he is clearly not a trustworthy person and it is a living animal not just a material item. I don't know what/where to go from here. What would others do? Any advice/thought welcome.

If he's a dog handler he will be in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, which is not a very large corps and if you have his name/address you should be able to contact them with regard to this and ask for help.

I went for a selection with this corps as a dog handler before going for another trade. They don't take on puppies. They take adult dogs only from a number of different sources. But certainly never puppies.

Also, I can't say as that I've heard of 'army cheques'. That's a new one to me.

It's more likely he's pretenting to be part of the 1st Military Working Dog Regiment. A subsidiary regiment of the Vet Corps, since it's obviously over five years since you tried to become a handler they may well be buying dogs now. Even the police are resorting to this tactic theses days.

What I do find strange is they bought an eight week old pup, twelve to sixteen week old would have been more believable. I wonder if the buyer came alone as I would have expected at least two handlers would have viewed the dog.

So many things here stink of fraud, the bounced cheque being the least of them.

Thanks to everyone who offered me positive and constructive advice. To those who judged me .... your comments were hurtful and I hope that you are never victims of crime and then told it is your own fault.

I have sorted it out - the pups are fine there was no need for me to panic ( but I suppose when you care that's what you do ! ) and I have recovered my money in full.

That's good and at least you posted back here.
You did get lots of good advice - the judgments are just part of forum life. So it would be helpful for you to let all those who took time to advise you, how you recovered your money.
