    1. Use google and lookoup his name and address, and anything you can find out.

    2. Check the address out on google earth. Is it real? Does it exist?

    3. 4 hours is nothing to drive if you care about the dogs welfare. We drove nearly 500 miles for a rescue dog!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

This is a civil matter and nothing to do with his employers.
Except that the OP claims he stated he was an Army dog handler, and was buying Rover to train for Army work.

I am sure his employer would be interested to know if he is misrepresenting his position and passing himself off as someone with authority he doesn't have.

Of course, I might be wrong, and Rover's completed his training and now doing sterling work fetching back any grenades they throw so they can put the pins back in...

I'd imagine that his CO has other priorities than chasing up his junior ranks' bad debts...but of course the OP can always say that he will be copying the correspondence to the employer-it does no harm to up the ante.
Reading again, I'm bemused as to how the OP thinks that getting paid months after the event will improve the welfare of the pup? Isn't it rather late to worry about that now?

But not so worried about the welfare of the pup to go and find out.

Does he even still have the dog?

Thank you for your replies - some of which have been very helpful.I shall contact a solicitor to write a letter (thanks jethrouk) and I shall check out the army board link (thanks Wealdroam) I shall also look into making a claim through the .gov.uk link (thanks Robartwork)

Nodding Donkey - Yes I did check this out and my understanding is that the military do now take pups for trainining from 8 weeks old.

Notrichatall and sheramber - I am not sure what driving 4 hours to knock on his door would achieve? He may not be there, he probably won't have the cash, he would probably refuse to give me the pup ... just would lead to confrontation. Ok I would hopefully get to see the pup, but I can see photos of her on f/b in her training sessions and at home so yes he still has her and she is ok, but I worry because I no longer trust him. If he lived nearer I would have been round many times by now, but the reality is this distance is a barrier.

I know I have been naive in taking a cheque, I have already said this. I ask myself everyday why? I suppose I had spoken to him many times on the phone and by email, he came in his army uniform with ID and I suppose I felt backed into a corner because he had driven such a long way - stupid of me I know and I beat myself up over it everyday.
Sorry macman for my ignorance but what is an LBA? And your right I have messed around for far to long listening to his excuses and empty promises on f/b and I do need to do something else. Up until now I just didnt know what to do but everyone has been really helpful. Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply and for your useful advice which is very much appreciated.

I'd email him something along the lines of the following:

    '
The cheque was issued in the name of the MOD, so I will be contacting them for payment. A cheque is legal tender and cannot be cancelled as such, a court will only allow a defence such as fraudulently issued.
So if the accounts department of the MOD agree it was issued legitimately I will be filing a county court claim against them, i'm sure they won't be happy with being taken to court because of their employees behaviour.

If they tell me it wasn't issued genuinely, then i'm calling the police. I'm sure they'll also involve the military police if members of the armed forces are committing fraud in their name.

If you don't pay the money within 48hours i'm going to take this further.
    '

I don't understand why he'd cancel the cheque if he wasn't paying. My thoughts are the purchase wasn't authorised. So he wouldn't want his employer knowing how he's been using their cheque book. A major abuse. And the police being involved will not do his career any good. Might make him wake up.

You're right, dogs aren't ('just' - interesting addition there) material possessions, they're living things - if you agree, then why are you charging £350 per puppy ? and why are you only concerned that this person won't look after it now they didn't pay you ?

Write the money off and stop selling dogs for profit, well stop selling dogs completely, local (non RSPCA) rescue centres are full of them and they check someone's suitability BEFORE they hand the dog over.
