If I go down to collect the parcel myself I should not have to pay anything. .....

    Under what theory?

The parcel has been delivered to your district
RM has added administration charge because the sender has not followed process
If you don't want to pay for delivery then don't. RM will return it to the sender until somebody pays them for the job
When will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?

I wonder if Royal mail would accept a cheque for that £2.77?

    What do you think Jethro?

As long as the cheque doesn't bounce. Otherwise the OP and RM would both be guilty of fraud :rotfl:

OR ..... it could be that RM could have messed up ?

I have a regular seller on ebay who puts stamps on and I get the item .......

so who could mess up that ?

    RM?

    why yes ..... surprised ?

I had two parcels that I had to pay for incorrect postage duty .....

the first one , was refunded buy the seller ..... the second one I challenged the local sorting office .... at this point I would like to say that I am on fisrt name terms with them ( there that often). They told me how to claim this all back ...... and RM did refund me the postage ....

    all well and good ?

    well no

RM do not care one bit

I have had to make two trips that I should not have had to make

the seller has related to me that this has been happening to others .....

I asked to help RM sort this out .... I could send then the packaging . I could email pictures of the offending wrapping ..... help in any way....

guess what .... despite my best intentions ... RM do not care ....

they think the refund is enough !

well I am perfect and never make mistakes .....:rotfl:

but the reality is not the making of mistakes but how you learn from then and put them right !

so all the forum members who mocked the OP .....

I do not have a temper .... I do not fly off the handle .......

I want to keep buying from this seller .... she is good ..... the only way she has keep going is by writing in big letters on her packages that postage HAS been paid

please please do not all ways jump to conclusions

    Ralph,

At no point has the OP suggested that RM have made a mistake, just that they are the Devil's henchmen for having the audacity to offer to let the recipient pay this alleged shortfall, before they either dispose of or return the item.

Over the years I have had a number of such requests from RM, and in every case they have been correct in asserting the incorrect amount has been paid.

I had a similar card to the one the OP got.

Did I come on here suggesting RM was behaving fraudulently?
Did I insist that I shouldn't have to pay this amount?
Did I say that I shouldn't have to go and collect this item?

    Well, no, I didn't.

I was pretty sure that it was a card from my sister so I went off to collect it, politely paid the fee (I didn't fly off the handle at all :rotfl:) and then asked the guy behind the counter to check that it actually was too thick for the postage paid.
    It was.
It was one of those greetings cards with 'stick-on' bits.

    @ Ralph-y
I think the responses that posters get is often directly related to the tone of the first post.
If the OP had asked her questions instead of insisting how she shouldn't have to pay, shouldn't have to go to collect it etc, I think she may have received replies that were different in tone - but not content.

I had a letter which needed extra payment. I popped into the office-asked to see the parcel, established it was a catalogue from a company I wasn't interested in and refused it. I later emailed the company to let them know about the undercharge. Simples.
  • I don't know how on earth this can be a matter for the Police or 'ActionFraud' when the Royal Mail have simply provided a service and now require payment.

As to how the item could have been posted without sufficient postage, it may have been either placed into a postbox: or the sender perhaps left it at a post office's 'parcel position', at a busy time - and 'legged it':D

Either way, the issue is between the sender and the recipient (if s/he chooses to collect)

This happened to me in reverse. We sent several cards to a relative all in one envelope. Knowing that it might be heavier/thicker than a standard envelope, I asked our local village PO to check and all was fine, it passed the gauge test and was stamped accordingly. TWO weeks later a postman knocked on relative's door and requested payment for under-stamping plus fine. They paid and I said keep the envelope. I took it back in to our local PO and they said it should not have been a problem but sometimes the equipment at sorting office will detect it is thicker if the envelope is full of air and gets puffed up. When you check manually you press down slowly and allow all the air to come out but the equipment does not do that. If there is ever any doubt about correct amount of postage I ask the nice PO lady to write on it "Postage checked at PO" and put their official stamp on it. Not been a problem since.
