Cause Novas are pretty hard to find now

My hubby has had both. His nova was probably the only one in the country that the DVLA and insurance knew it had a red top engine fitted.

He then suffered a midlife crisis at 27 and bought a saxo VTS before realising a month later he hated it- too loud, too small etc

I still check in with various car forums and facebook groups for modified related stuff.

For most it's a fun way to (try?) and be creative. Make something that looks ok, look better. Something that drives ok drive better. Goes quick, go quicker etc.
I guess there's a sense of accomplishment when something's done and you like it and all goes well. You often learn a lot as well.

I've never been a fan of loud exhausts though unless it's something worth turning your head around to see. Same with the seat tilted back. Had a lot of friends that ticked all the usual boxes for cars / drivers like that but i've always been more for practical / subtle mods and trying to keep myself comfortable.

Some modified cars can look good, But mostly they take a fairly boring and dull car and just make it utterly useless.

I followed some debadged VW or a clone a while back, No idea what it started out as but they had lowered it so much that they couldnt take any corners at normal speeds. The thing bounced from minor ripples in the road.

edit: just spotted the post above re: loud exhausts. the funniest one ever besides the massive 4" ones on a 1L hatchback was a Ford Capri. It was so loud but despite the noise it just was not going any faster than any other the quiet cars pulling away from the lights.

  • Its the same thing why people are so into eddie stobbart trucks, and people who travel all over the world to see a rare train, plane, ship or bird.
The same reason why people restore OLD vintage cars, Why they meet up at classic shows, why they go to road rally's and clubs.

Passion for the subject, Enthusiasm to see new things, and meet new people and see rare things odd things funny things, and see new trends, to admire the the skill and craft that it takes to make their car unique, and new colour schemes.

To trouble shoot problems, swap parts and discuss life on the road.

This is what it meant to me when I was younger, it was not about the "status" or "the loudest" or "the fastest" or "thrills of racing other people".

Minority ruined it for the majority.

Midlife at 27? Is he planning to live fast and die young? If so, make sure he's well insured :D.
  • The exhaust on my car is pretty loud :O If I come home late at night or leave early in the morning have to keep it in third to keep the revs down.

While a front wheel drive hatchback wouldn't be my choice, there is an appeal in taking something a manufacturer makes to appeal to a mass market, which means chock full of compromises, and altering it to perform better in the respects that I want it to while possibly making it less suitable for (say) going to Tesco or the school run.

Exhausts are typically restrictive of gas flow to make them quiet which deadens the engine power. They can be made better flowing without necessarily causing a massive increase in noise (or tailpipe diameter). Done properly, rather than cheaply, the exhaust sound will be deeper and possibly a bit louder, rather than much louder like one of the boxes has blown.

As for the speed they are doing, generally a modified car won't be driven faster as the same speed limits still apply ;)

Nowadays the only modifications I do are for vehicles I use in motorsport, which is subject to strict noise limits and testing of all competing vehicles..
