How do you sort out your photos?

I have a few thousand photos digital and scanned which I need to sort out.
Windows lets me put them in folders and rename them.

At the moment I have a folder for each year and sub folders for each year. I am having problems with the scanned photos because I do not know what exaxt year they were taken.

Are there any programmes that will help me catalogUe them better but still let me use them in WMC?

You could try Picasa from Google: http://picasa.google.com/
It scans all your folders and allows you to organise them, and it's free

I'll second that, was sceptical of picasa and put off trying it for years especially since it became part of the googepack. But after trying it, it is now my default photo and picture organiser. Definitely excellent freeware and I'm sure it would beat the pants off most paid software competitors.

I've had a quick look at Picasa in the past and think they have a limit on free storage. If you have several thousand photographs I suggest you invest in some software that you can buy into for the long term. It's also gong to take a lot of time to set up and apply keywords so you need something thats going to be supported long term.

The web albums have a limit of 1Gb. This does not affect how you use Picasa however, just how much you can conveniently upload from within Picasa. If you need more online space, sign up to another google account or go to something like https://www.humyo.com
