Macbook Pro 13" or wait for 15"

Options
Lets start this by not turning into an apple overpriced thread!

I am looking at the new macbook or macbook pro 13".

It looks like much better bang for buck on the new 13" macbook pro.

Uses will be

MS office, Netlfix, web browsing, basic photo work.

Peoples thoughts, or should I hang fire for the 15" Macbook pro? Any ideas on that release date

  • Is the 15" Pro coming back? I want a MacBook Pro but gutted they only do 13" now
  • In response to your question though, the 13" MacBook Pro will be great for all that and more! The standard RAM and Processor it comes with will be fine :)

If you're set on a MB, the only real question is ... Is a 13" screen big enough for you?

PS - the Apple UK website lists a MBP 15" :)

Thanks, that is the old tech one, the 13" has the new tech and new touch pad on it, the 15" did not get the makeover (as yet)

I suggest you have a look at both and decide.

I have a 13" MBP because I wanted my laptop to be portable rather than lugable and the 15" was too big and a fair bit heavier.

When I bought it the MacBook Air had just been released but it only came in 11", while it was fantastic size and weight wise was just a bit too small for my needs.

If I was buying now I'd probably go for the 13" Air.

That said my MBP is one of the upgradable ones and it came with a 250BG HDD and 4GB RAM. It is now fitted with a 1TB SSD and 8GB of RAM. not something you can do with the new ones.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.

The 15" never went away, but we've lost the 17".
Anyway, you should have the size decided, it's not worth buying the wrong size.
Now that you've chosen the size, it's a terrible time to buy the 15 - the 13 has just been upgraded so the 15 will be due to get that brilliant/gimmicky (delete as appropriate) trackpad, and a bump in speed. Take note of the cost as that's unlikely to change.

Interesting that the current 15" mentions ever-so-slightly-slower-clocked (albeit with a higher turbo boost) quad core i7 CPUs whereas the new 13" mentions dual core i5 CPUs. (Per the Apple link I posted earlier). Yet the 15" is slower?

    Not according to http://browser.primatelabs.com/mac-benchmarks

Any computer from the last 5 years is going to be fast enough to do what the OP wants as long as its got enough RAM to deal with the increasingly heavy OSs (particularly on Macs).

The question really comes down to what size/ weight and battery life the OP wants. Each version of the mac tends to be updated annually and so if they really want the new touchpad then it shouldnt be too long a wait for the 15" to get its update, subject to the intel CPUs becoming available in quantity.

I would recommend staying away from the new Macbook.

Having just one port, is admittedly revolutionary, but that will become a bit of a nuisance eventually.

Plus, you haven't mentioned anything about wanting portability. And that's what the new Macbook has been designed for.

If I were you, I would hang tight and wait for the 15". You're probably just getting a bit restless because you know you could have a new laptop tomorrow. But sitting tight and waiting will be the best option.

And I'm not going to say Apple is overpriced, I have an iPhone and MBP. But the new Macbook is overpriced, it is a netbook which has the same functionality as a Chromebook.

So, definitely wait and get a MBP in whatever size you prefer

Its like you know me Alex!

All that shiny new tech has got my logical thinking all on the bonk!

I think I am decided against the macbook as I will be charging and presenting simultaneously so even on that basis 1 port does not work. Yes I need it to be portable, but I won't be lugging it around for hours on end, so a little extra weight is not an issue.

It is essentially between the 13" and 15" Macbook pro, and taking a step back, in reality it is impossible to decide this until the 'new' 15" MBP comes out, with pricing and specs.

So I think I will take note, hang fire, and hope that the 15" MBP will be released summer time as anticipated, and make a judgement call.
