Hi
We have a 8 year old Toshiba Laptop and are looking to either trade in or upgrade the software.
Does anyone know a good place to do a trade in?
Or any advice on whether it is cheaper/worth while to upgrade the software?
Thanks

Sell the whole thing on eBay as 'for spares'. (wipe or remove the disk)0

Like a right old banger worth nothing and any trade in is just instead of a new sale discount .0

Q: Is wiping the hard drive enough to ensure no one can steal your data?0

As JJ says, it's worth nothing. Be a cash buyer at wherever takes your fancy, and once you've transferred data to the new machine take the hard disk out of the Tosh and smash it beyond repair.0

software are the programmes , the operating system and the programmes you have installed over time
hardware is the computer itself , the "hard" black/grey/white thing0 -
My current laptop is just over two years old. Nothing special, a Medion 1.8GHz Celeron. It cost me £215 at the time. Some sites such as Laptops Direct offer to buy your old laptop. using their simple evaluation tool they valued mine at £80! Of course they have to make a profit and I'd probably get more selling it on Ebay or in Micro Mart - provided it did sell and not right away either.
So an 8 year old laptop is worth nothing I'm afraid. As Sooler suggests sell it for spares, perhaps even taking it apart and selling the hard disk and memory separately. If you get £20 - 30 you've done well.0 -
Why not just keep the old one in case the new one breaks down or has a problem? Laptops don't take up much space.0

And why destroy a (I assume) perfectly good drive?
A caddy for around £5-10 and you've got somewhere to use as a back-up or portable drive.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.0 -

Good point. I did just this with an old laptop with an 80gb HDD (which itself was an upgrade to a 40gb).
Just make sure the external USB caddy has an internal IDE connector (almost a certainty with an 8 year old laptop) rather than the more usual SATA.0 -

Or spend a few more quid to get a brand new bigger and faster hard drive rather than an ancient one that's probably approaching the end of it's life anyway.0
