Which company do I pay my water bill to?

I moved into a private rented flat. The landlord bought it, and then I moved in but he has never lived in it. He doesn't know who the water bill is paid to and neither do I. He was given info on electric and gas but not on the water.
Does anybody know a way of finding out which company this flat pays water bills to?

Ask neighbours? Or look at https://www.ofwat.gov.uk/consumerissues/watercompanies/map/

Are you in Scotland?..... if so water charges are added to your council tax bill and collected that way.....unless of course you're on a meter.

I think there are less than a handful of properties in my area on meters, businesses are as its required but I dont know anyone with a water meter and have not seen one in a domestic property ever.

You register with your regional water supplier-there is no choice of water suppliers in England and Wales. Where do you live, i.e. first part of your postcode?
baldelectrician: I find that strange, because according to OFWAT, 48% of residential homes are now on a metered supply. You wouldn't normally see a meter in a home, because they are generally installed on the property boundary (under the pavement) where the supply allows. Flats are more likely to have a meter inside the actual property.

That's a bit worrying as it sounds as though he never registered his purchase with the water company.
(You don't want to pay for the period he owned it before you moved in)

Anyway, no one here can tell you unless you give us a clue where you live.
Ask a neighbour. They'll be able to tell you the water supplier for your area.

OfWat covers England and Wales

In Scotland only 562 residential properties out of 2.5 million have water meters.

Don't forget - when you find out who supplies your water don't provide them with personal details. Simply write to them as "the occupier" or Mr Surname, stating the date you moved in and, if applicable, meter readings for that date. In your letter request the account number, then set up a standing order/pay monthly by cheque or whatever. If you supply them with sufficient identifiable information they may - depending on the company - report your account to the credit reference agencies; a thoroughly bad thing.

Do not phone them or sign up online; they'll badger you for the personal information if you do - online you can't proceed without entering it.

I didn't realise you were in Scotland. OP has not bothered to come back, so we don't know where they live.
