I think I would be contacting both the charity and the bank to say- look keep the £1 but I have not authorised any such payments and none are to be made in the future. Yes, complaining about £1 is a bit nit-picking, but of course it could be the start of much larger demands.....
I remember once a magazine took a DD from my new bank a/c- they never had authorisation and I could not get to the bottom of how it happened- I never had a satisfactory explanation. They had had authorisation from the old a/c but their DD was not on the list when I switched. The money was refunded.... eventually- these things do happen.

  • It doesn't matter if it was £1 or a £100. That £1 could have also overdrawn on his bank account costing the OP expensive bank costs. I would'nt worry about a £1 but i would investigate who give consent to take it out.

Did the Red Cross actually receive the £1? Have they confirmed that the bank account the £1 was paid into is actually a genuine Red Cross account?
My concern woulld be that the £1 is just a "tester" and perhaps the OP's a/c has been compromised, with more amounts to be withdrawn if it's not questioned.
From some posts on this forum some people don't check their a/cs for months.

Oh, for goodness sake, I've just responded to a post started last May!

It's like when I go shopping and a cashier ask me for £0.10 or sometimes £0.02 in front of an entire queue, and I need to find a politically correct excuse to say no without looking like a moron.

What's wrong with a cashier asking that if it makes it easier to give you the right change? And why would you look like a moron anyway?

I always try to find the pence if it's helpful.

A £6 pack of cigarettes earlier, I gave the cashier £21, knowing that a £20 note was the smallest I had on me, and that it would mean I didn't get a large amount of change back (I got a £10 and £5 note, plus a 1p piece, instead of relieving the till of a 4 £1 coins)

Nothing wrong at all with it IMO.
