in Credit cards
Hi, I hope I've put this in the right place, if not my apologies and feel free to delete.
I went to apply for balance transfer credit card on MBNA website but they ask for my sort code and account details! I haven't applied for credit in a long time and wasn't sure if this was standard? Aren't we normally warned never to give our bank details? I can't understand why they'd need this info when I'm only applying for the card. Fair enough they might ask for this info after accepting my application but why would they need it now?
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you

It's standard and required when applying for any loan or credit card. The lender needs this info to run a credit check on you. Based on this check you either get accepted, rejected, or you're asked for further docs.0 -

Yes, that is so. But financial organisations such as MBNA are 100% reliable and will never compromise your data, so there shouldn't be a problem. :rotfl:0 -

No, we aren't.
Our bank details are printed on all our cheques that we give to random people or companies. It's main purpose is for them to check your identity to protect against identity theft.
Something not quite right here0 -

Out of interest, how?
I know that with cards you can obtain an authorisation and it'll check that name and address match but with a sort code and account number?
All you'd really be able to check is that it's valid (not a working account but is a valid combination) and if are asked who they bank with, that the sort code is indeed used by that bank.0 -

Your account number and sort code of most current accounts is mentioned on the credit report that the searcher sees.0 -
Generally speaking other potential lenders cannot see your bank account details on your credit file, but they are not confidential in any event. They are indeed on your cheques, and probably on your debit card too - mine certainly is. You also give them to your employer (mostly), HMRC, energy companies, etc etc.
And if you don't want to give them to MBNA, you can always apply for a card from another lender.0
