Electricity bill spike

We are fairly good at regular meter readings and unplugging stuff round the house but our bill has gradually been creeping up- I like to keep an eye on it - but any ideas to explain a sudden spike in our electric bill?

Our bill is usually been £20 and £40 depending on how much we're home during that month. Both work full time so out during the day and then we are in in the evenings.

Jan- approx £20 -usage approx 130kw
Feb - approx £30- usage approx 200kw
March - approx £110 :eek: - usage approx 1200kw!

We're with First Utility and have been since August with no problems. Swapped tariffs with them in Jan but on tariff showing as cheapest.
Neither of us can think of anything that has significantly changed so are stumped. I thought I'd read the meter wrong and added on an extra 1000 (as that would make sense) but unfortunately not. I've decided to do daily readings for this month to try and monitor it. Any ideas?

You Jan and Feb bills were very small - were these readings correct ?

How does 2015 compare with 2014 ?

I would check meter readings daily as well.

Also agree your Jan reading seem low at just over 4kw per day roughly, even Feb reading works out just over 7kw per day.

Catch up bill based on actual meter readings perhaps?

yup those jan/ feb readings seem to be way off. they should be a lot more than that. unless you live in a shed lol,


even if you turn things off, those readings seem unlikely for the time of year,
looks as tho the march bill is an actual reading maybe? and the usage as caught up with you perhaps.

Your calculations don't seem right - either the £110 is wrong or the 1200kw when comparing with the previous two months.

Sorry, but those numbers make no sense to me whatsoever.

What is, do you think, the unit charge & standing charge, that make up those values???

I suggest you wait until tomorrow and then contact the supplier for a full explanation


Edit: As Lou Kozade has already spotted
(But I don't think the first two are correct either, unless the OP has ignored the standing charge)

The OP, if what they have posted is in any way correct, has said they do not have an immersion heater.
Therefore they presumably have gas for some purposes, which probably includes space heating.

On that basis, one could be of the opinion that January consumption is about correct and February consumption too high.
