Bank accounts that update as you use them?

This really annoys me with Santander, It only updates on week days. For example my account I have been using over the bank holiday weekend, my balances have stayed the same, my account hasn't been refreshed since Thursday, I had pay due in Friday, had it been refreshed it would be in. It means I have to keep note of everything I spend or I could get caught out, and even during the week some items such as shopping from Tesco don't come of the balance for 2-3 days down the line.

My wifes account on the other hand refreshes all the time, direct debits have gone of her balance, withdrawals have gone of her balance and if she has say a credit due to go in on Monday it will show on her account on Sunday with the date of Monday and she would be able to withdraw on it even though it hadn't fully cleared.

I would switch to her bank but there are no local branches. Any recommendations?

Is there a particular reason that you need a local branch? I must admit I rarely ever go into a bank.

I know that my RBS/Natwest accounts show immediately any changes in balance, as does my Nationwide. The only times it doesn't are when I make a purchase using contactless payment.

There are lots of great deals for switching out there, perhaps it is time to make a move?

    Good luck.

My Mrs is with Ulsterbank, also part of the RBS group. I don't know why I'd like a local branch, in case I ever need to go in, in saying that I've been with Santander 10 years and never been in branch

I have a 1-2-3 account with Santander and it does show all movements immediately. I use it as a savings account and don't have my salary paid into it but I've made faster payments from it over a weekend and it's updated immediately.

If you're paid by BACS (as I suspect most people are) then you probably wouldn't have been paid on Friday as it was a non-BACS day.

Thats the difference, I am on an old current Santander account no longer available, No I get paid via faster payments, didn't update, same way I withdrew money on Saturday didn't update.

Okay then that's poor service in this day and age. I'm not surprised that you're fed up with them. Perhaps consider switching to First Direct. I also bank with them and they're pretty good. They used to pay £100 (or £125) to switch too. I assume that's it's still on offer but you'd obviously have to check.

Then change to the 123 account - and get the interest

Conversely, debits coming out on a Monday will also have been debited at the weekend. That is a bad system because it confuses people; they don't have an accurate picture of how much they have available in their accounts at a weekend.

The RBS group, inc NatWest and Ulster Bank, recognise that it's a bad system and they are in the process of changing it, so your wife won't be able to withdraw Monday's money on a Sunday for much longer: https://supportcentre.ulsterbank.co.uk/app/answers/detail/a_id/4136/~/it-is-the-weekend,-why-do-i-have-less-money-than-i-should-have%3F

So how does your wife manage with no local branch, or am I wrong to assume you live together?

Fine, she never needs to go in, I never need to go to Santander either to be honest, I suppose I am just being stupid.

NatWest / RBS don't show correct balances when your cards used in an offline situation.
