How do I go about finding a reliable and competent firm of builders to replace a ceiling damaged by water and redecorate? It's a pretty small job, so a small firm would be great.

We had a good experience using Rated People (I think, will check). The insurance company suggested we use the service.

In the end, we paid for it ourselves, didn't make a claim.

I think some trades people use it as a way into a relationship with a customer. We certainly used the tradesman for other work.

I am still left with the puzzle about how you can spend so much to look so "homely". Are other NP haapy with what they spend and how they look?
    ...

I'm terrible with normal clothing. I don't have much of an interest.

Running or fitness gear, completely different. I argue that I need trail shoes, road shoes, gym shoes. Specialist running gear from the likes of Skins can easily be £100+ for a pair of compression leggings.

Some of it is a bit bright/garish too (for my tastes).

BBC2 just starting, 8pm, one of those "Back in Time" programmes (a new one) .. family living in the 1950s. Look at how people used to live.

Of course, it's a TV view of how people lived in the 1950s, with all the new stuff available, whereas real people were living with the stuff they still had from the 20s/30s and what sticks of furniture were remaining after the War.

I don't know why we need a TV programme to show us how rubbish it was. Plenty of older people still lived like that in the 60s.

I suppose younger types need to have it shown to them to see how spoilt everybody is now.;)

About 10 years ago it was common for corner shops to charge you to make photocopies of documents, 4p a copy then it went up, and they'd have a big sign outside with the price.

Don't see so many signs like that now; is it still a thing? Or have cheap 3-in-one printers done away with that need?

Most libraries have printers and photocopiers. We're where a lot of people come to when they have no printing at home. Many libraries also send faxes.

Having said that, as we have those facilities, you become aware of your competition. There are a lot of small pharmacies that have really nice printers to do photos, some of these also do quality printing, colour copying, even send faxes!

Try and catch Sugar Free Farm on ITV+1 at 9pm.

It's a bunch of celebs on a crash course no sugar diet.

It's amazing how sugar has replaced fat. Sugar is terribly addictive.

I notice that Nigel Lawson has proposed that Corporation Tax is replaced by a tax based on sales.

Yet it barely gets a mention.

Could a very modest sales tax raise the same as corp tax does now, if the likes of Amazon and Starbucks had to pay it?

Amazon doesn't dodge Corporation Tax it's just innumerate journalists that claim that they do.

Don't we have a sales tax already called VAT? I thought the issue was that all these multinationals took advantage of EU rules and made all their sales in Luxembourg as it has the lowest EU VAT rate....

Is it a job a competent decorator could do?

If so, I know a perfectionist that is quite expensive, but not extortionate.

I'm actually a huge fan of Scottish independence and thus no longer having to fund their welfare state any more - can we also separate from Wales, Northern Island and the North East too please?
