Our bills are way down and the house warmer this year, however it is the same boiler just that December was as warm as a typical April....

We got a new one a little while ago.

House is definitely warmer.... Not sure about the bills yet.

Our house got warmer when we replaced some radiators and some pipework a couple of years ago.

We left the radiators but had them flushed and replaced all the thermostatic valves.

    That helped a lot.

  • Well the leg of lamb is in the oven.

Mrs McT should be back shortly from a day of shopping with Mother McT.

Bank account appears to be a wee bit lighter than it was when I looked this morning so clearly they've had fun...

Leader (I think) of the Womens Equality Party was on Daily Politics just now.

They never ask the right questions.

I want to know why it isn't called the Womens Superiority Party. After all, I am frequently being told women can multitask more ; are more empathetic in management etc.

Putting "superior" in the title would just reflect what most women think! ;)

I'm sorry that misguided women have treated you like that. :(

The "women are superior" drivel is always either
    (a) believed by idiot women who don't understand that claiming one sex is superior to the other is just as silly and offensive whichever way round it's done, or
    (b) a way for men who are sexist but otherwise quite nice guys to excuse their attitudes - it always ends up restricting women from doing certain things because of our alleged "superiority", but enables them to continue feeling good about themselves.

As far as empathetic management etc is concerned, it's a red herring. Sure, there are, in general, in all of life, some desirable traits that are more common, on average, in women, and other desirable traits that are more common, on average, in men. Big deal. That's irrelevant to (in this example) the capacity for empathy of any particular candidate for any particular management position. And similarly for other situations of the kind.

If some institution or workplace finds itself with few women or none at all, it's worth asking "how might we be consciously or unconsciously discriminating?" and "how can we make our working conditions more attractive to more female applicants?" but I don't agree with positive discrimination. It's just discrimination, whatever adjective you care to attach to it.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Our house is at 24C at the moment...

    Shorts and T-shirt weather.... Indoors.

    It's about -3C outside.

    I doubt I've ever been in a house that's 24°!!

Maybe it's time for an NP question: How warm/hot is your house - or, the room you're in at the moment (on the basis that some of us only heat the main/one room we're in and not the whole house ever).

    24C

Whole house. (Actually, the second kitchen is much colder as one window in there isn't double glazed, and the back door's a bit draughty - probably 16C at a guess)

I'm currently in shorts and a short sleeved shirt - which is my daily attire at home.

If it gets down to -10C or colder outside and/or very windy I may put on some slippers, old Victorian houses can have draughts, and this one is no exception.

I did adjust the heating curve because DD1s bed was next to a radiator and I was worried that when it gets very cold and thus the rads get very hot she might burn herself in the night, we have now rearranged the rooms so I should probably make the curve steeper again as at the moment it does start to feel slightly cooler inside when it goes sub-zero outside. I have a t-shirt and thin sweatshirt on at the moment and am fine sitting still, I would be too hot if I moved around. Kids insist on bare feet and skimpy pjs so it cant be that cold and they mostly seem to kick off the covers overnight.

Boiler is set at 22 in the day and 17 from 11pm to 5am, thermometer in our room which is probably the coldest generally reads about 22 in the day and 19 at night.
    I think....

    I'm not :)

I really don't mind. I do think that men can be more task focussed, and DW reminds me that being people focussed isn't such a bad thing.

I'd have no objections if women dominated parliament, but I hope they don't have to feel they have to emulate men to achieve this. I've had my fill of arrogant traditional male MPs.

I'm mildly surprised at the results from this thread...

I decided you are pulled your punches a bit so I waded in with something fairly uncontroversial - well it is Saturday evening so what better sport than a spot of trolling :)

I was wandering around a nearby supermarket and picked up a pack of chicken breasts, four pork loin chops, and a slab of steak mince for under a £ total thanks to yellow stickers. I'd never seen such bargains and after I'd picked them up I had to duck aside as a stampede of other shoppers saw them and ran over and stuffed their baskets. Like a lawless melee it was.

Sitting here stuffed with pork casserole in front of a fire and my only two worries for tonight are:
PN has mentioned cheesecake and I haven't any.
I will have to walk the dog tonight and it's arctic out there. :(
