Doesn't that sort of temp change play havoc with your body?
I guess when it gets that hot and windy suddenly the lack of airtightness in Aussie homes that tou have mentioned before matters again.
Still on the brightside in a couple of weeks the pool and the cold beer together may provide some relief. We will think of you as we struggle through the force 7 driving sleet tomorrow morning.
It does for some people. I see the cool change as a blessed relief personally.
In a kind of masochistic way I quite like it. The weather spends about five days building to a crescendo and then it collapses. It is amazing when the change comes through, it can drop 15C or more in just a few minutes. Normally it's only oppressive for a day or two. This week for example we had a couple of days that were mid-30s which is hot but you can still cope with it. It was only today that things were off the charts. Then tomorrow it'll be 23C or thereabouts.
My head just won't stop aching and I'd go to sleep only it's too darn hot.
There's only one thing for it: open the bottle of Little Creature. It's nice. I can confirm that beer that has sat in the fridge for a bit since getting home from the bottlo is more refreshing than beer that has sat in the car for a few minutes on the way home and then opened.0 -
Gen, will the a/c be better at the new place?
Enjoy the beer, hopefully it will cool down soon for you. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? It'll be better in the rooms where we have it but worse in the rooms where we don't.
At present we have 'ducted air con' which means we have an air duct in the ceiling of each room which pumps out warm or cold air on demand. However, it doesn't pump out much air, I suspect because the filters need a good cleanout but as I'm only here for another week I CBA to do that. It works well enough up in the bedroom part of the house.
In the new place we'll have reverse cycle air con which is a unit in the wall a bit like the ones they have in dodgy houses US movies only updated. IIRC there are 2 units, one in the master bedroom (thankfully, though tough poo kids) and one in the sitting/dining room.vivatifosi wrote: »Enjoy the beer, hopefully it will cool down soon for you.
I did and now I'm enjoying a glass of wine while The Boy and I cook bacon and pea risotto together.
No sign of the cool change yet although it is noticeably more pleasant out there now. Probably down to about 33C at a guess.0 -

Without wishing to politicise things, I don't think it's contentious to say that the British Government has shown that it is very bad at running British businesses down the years.
Shame we threw out the baby with the bathwater and didn't just hire foreign management teams or subcontract some nationalised industry management functions to, say, the German government and keep the profits for us in this country, but that's hindsight for you. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

Yeah, maybe.
I'm not sure that it's even possible to Google it any more but the basic problem with Nationalised Industries back in the day was what was known as marginal cost pricing. It almost ensured that at least in theory all Nationalised Industries would make a cash flow loss. That's not my prejudice but baked into the theory.
Add to that the fact that with a Nationalised Industry it is relatively simple for a single union to stop all coal production or rail provision and so can capture very high wages and job security under almost all conditions for their staff (drunken tube drivers anyone?) perhaps it is unsurprising that Nationalised Industries were terrible.
Capitalism and private enterprise works best under conditions of creative destruction and that needs a ruthless application of profit and loss. Capitalism has brought us unparalleled increases in living standards and health care.0 -

Recent UK governments subcontracted entire IT departments out to private companies.
What this meant in reality was the same 'safe' staff being sold back in at a typical rate of £550 a day a decade back. That's not really MSE is it.
(I doubt it is so *cheap* now)
Just outsourcing a whole function is lazy. If you create open standards and allow a wide variety of companies to access the market created (big & small) you get more innovation and drive.0 -
The news is depressing. The weather is depressing. The days are getting shorter. I feel like Eeyore. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0
