Speaking of freebies. Trev, have you spotted that you can upgrade your 10.7 Lion OSX to Yosemite for free?
    DD's done that, no problems.

Do check that all any paid-for software will run on it, but usually it will (for this particular upgrade).

    Hmm. Apple speak.

Only 2.4 million customers' full details have been hacked...... it was breaking news this afternoon(ish).

They use the term 'hacked' to cover a myriad of sins ....

    ... just saying like ;)

Of course I am not claiming they have been inept, unlike a household Scottish bank which delivered thousands of bank statements to one address ! :rotfl:

I see the friendly forum team have been busy deleting/editing posts again this morning.

Talking monkeys are apparently now verboten.

I might have mentioned that our mutual friend was a little off topic. I suspect that trailing posts were also deleted.

    Dilemma time.

Turns out I'm in NY at the time of the New York marathon.

I'm so tempted to go for it but for 2 snags :

    1) Entry fee is $350 which is quite steep.
    2) I'd have to raise $2,500+ charity donations to get a place. I'm always uncomfortable with asking people to sponsor me.

So...I rule it out, and 10 mins later I am back to thinking about it again.

(I don't even know if I can do a marathon; I'm not in the flush of youth)

    Jeez, thanks Gen....

That rant took me a whole 60 seconds to compose in a cocktail induced state of moral outrage, and in a moment of truly inspired befuddlement, even included the word 'Panspermian'.

How on earth am I supposed to top that?

I'm not a big fan of that particular massive American mega-corp which seeks to dominate the technology world.

The rest of the family may have Apple, but I use Google - a massive mega-corp which seeks to dominate the technology world.

Very different as you can see :D

Michaels,I think you're the King of moneysaving, but you're also highlighted some of it's problems. I don't stooze, change credit cards, and (apart from Gas and Electricity suppliers) usually stick with other service suppliers.

I have two Bank accounts, two debit cards,a cash back Amex and Mastercard. I can manage all of these online, remember the passwords, and know which third party account each is associated with.OK I could save a bit more 'playing the system' but don't have to worry when something like this happens.

I hope this Carphone Warehouse disaster dosen't cause you too many problems.

Isn't it more a problem created by (i) the mercenary pricing structures employed by companies which force you to switch every 12-24 months or be financially penalised and (ii) the failure of said companies to spend enough of the money they have gouged out of the customers who fail to switch on data security?

Find a charity that is short of runners and they will do the hard work of raising sponsorship for you. Not the biggest charities that have hoards of people wanting to run under their banner and not the littlest charities that haven't got the resources to get the sponsorship rolling in, but the ones in the middle.

OF course they are also not being at all forthcoming over what data has been leaked, I have spoken to talktalk who claim that I am probably not affected because I have a landline account with them but they are not certain that the application bit which I did about 2 months ago might not belong to cpw and have been compromised and as this part of the website is down at the moment I can not see what details I actually had to give when applying for a sim, I suspect I probably had to put in a credit card long number even if if was not billed....

The suggestion that affected users pay money to experian, equifax etc to check their credit files for potential fraudulent activity is particularly 'amusing'....
    I think....

    Panspermian

    A word that I didn't know that I didn't know.

    I was impressed.
