We had blackbirds nesting in a honeysuckle near the kitchen window. they had hatched chicks , but one morning OH found feathers on the ground below the window. It was not our cat(not her modus operandi), and we think not a cat at all but another bird as a couple of days later OH saw a large speckled bird on the nest. It was too big to fit in it.He thought cuckoo, although we have not heard it's call. DD and I have seen a large thrush in the same area.
Plenty of birds will raid nests Crows etc I doubt it was a Cuckoo now getting very rare Sparrow Hawk maybe.0 -

in a suburban/ urban garden I'd keep what they live in and get rid of it out of nesting season.
I'm thinking after July should be safe enough.
Dug out some dangerous roots this evening & also chopped some branches overgrowing out of a hedge. They look so much bigger on the ground! It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

Rare but not non existant, thankfully. I heard one on nature reserve at local town where I get my hair cut just recently..
It depends where you are. Spirit's not ( in birdy terms) in wildly different part of world from me, and has could local haunts for some birds.
Oddly for a couple of years we had a wildly inappropriate duck and his wives come to stay. Still, it happened and was nice to see.
We get loads of bop from our local unpopulated area. I wish they 'd get more rodents0 -
Well it was today not yesterday as first thought, but wife got to see them all on TV just before leaving for work. They all may be rather excited today
There is a BBC article/ watch now too. When using the housing forum please use the sticky threads for valuable information.0 -

It's still blustery out there - this seems like the year of eternal wind! For the last 2 days it's been the sort of wind where it's tricky to open the door as it gets ripped from your hand by the wind so you have to get a good grip when you turn the handle so it doesn't bend back and get damaged (outward opening patio doors).
I always try to avoid driving in the wind or rain - and I'll be driving into rain/storms in a bit too.
How the weather varies around the country! We are expecting hot and sunny here in London. Pollution will be low, and pollen very high.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

I hear them quite often when out birdwatching but it would be very unusual to find them on a blackbirds nest in a garden and they are insect feeders.
I'd like to know what rodents or any mammals that come into my garden get the odd mouse in my garage and had a nice hedgehog a couple of days ago tempted to get a camera trap0 -

I think it depends where the garden is. garden can vary from urban / suburban square, to plot cut out of woods in country side......
In my garden we have very few 'garden' birds..ones we have most are tits, Robbins, bullfinch. Blackbirds.
Otoh, we have hedge sparrows galore, darling little things! Swallows, lots of bop coming by, and owls who come at dusk sometimes to see if I have treats for them. Lots of wag tails, ducks, coots, sometimes a couple of resting swans or geese, murmurations of starlings later in year that feel like living in an old film with fewer frames per second..... Game birds.
'Garden' is a very flexible term. I don't know what spirit's garden is like, but I know roughly where she is. I don't discount the possibility.
Things I miss here compared to last house are kingfishers ( we have water near by, but not near enough for these shy things) and woodpeckers. I would imagine Spirit gets more wood pecker there. None in my garden.0 -

Again, idea of garden, varies.. We get nice fat farm rats, along with all the other lovely variety of rodents expected on organic farm land. Our neighbours run a 'hedgerow safari' for local schools, and we have a wonderful variety of British wildlife that the kids get to see.
Hedgehogs can be remarkably bold. We have no cameras or anything. I see plenty which makes me very happy.
This weekend I rescued a cross, soft, fat mole from a cat and popped him/her out to do its worst in my fields..

I know it's surprising what can turn up in a garden I live in surburban area not to far from open countryside and water. Never had a kingfisher in my garded but then no pond etc must have been really nice. I get most of normal garden birds and like you bullfinch(lovely bird) but I've also had buzzard, redpoll, reed bunting. Funnily enough I rarely get house sparrows or starlings.0 -

On the subject of moles my back lawn has been ruined by a mole tried everything to move him on but couldn't gave up and he went eventually.0
