Hawaii family holiday - HELP!

Got to agree EGYPT would be my choice, some great 5* hotels, g'teed sun, almost all AI, great beaches, snorkling, topped with a 5 hour flight each way. Easily do-able for 7 days0

I'm Canadian and Hawaii is our version of your trips to Spain, Portugal, etc.
In all the years we've gone there, we've only found a couple of hotels that include breakfast in the room rate. And then it was a pretty generic buffet.
Oahu is tourist all the way. We joke that Waikiki is the Blackpool of the Pacific.
Maui is beautiful but can best be described as "for the newlywed or nearly dead".
Hawaii is wonderful Volcano, black sand beaches, coffee.
But for a week? Insanity. It's roughly a five hour flight for us and we usually go for a minimum of ten days. Flights out are usually in the evening so you either wind up paying to keep the room (in your case rooms) or spend ages at a really dull airport.
The best way for you would be to rent a couple of condos and self cater, which truly defeats the idea of a relaxing holiday in my eyes.
If you are looking for a resort, go to Cancun, Playa Del Carmen or even the Dominican. Cuba? meh, I'd avoid it like the plague.0 -

We have been to Hawaii twice, the first time took connecting flights through LAX with no stopover, the second five plus hour flight was just a blur and despite loving flying, could not wait to get off. The second time we did a stopover on the way out, and travelled business class the whole way, much better but still one hell of a long way and on both occasions we spent three weeks on holiday. Waikiki is just Blackpool for Americans and japanese, by all means stay for a few days to see the Polynesian Cultural Centre and Peatrl Harbour but the real Hawaii has long been lost in skyscrapers. You need to fly to the outer islands, Kauai and Hawaii itself to see the beauty of Hawaii and you can't do that in a week or ten days. Christmas will be hugely expensive and as others have said, hotels operate on a room only basis, I have never seen any AI anywhere.
Lovely place, but just far too far and far too expensive at Christmas to even give it a second thought0
