Own Domain Name & Email Forwarding

I'm toying with the idea of getting a Domain Name from 123-reg.co.uk . I only want it to create a personalised email address that is independent of any ISP.
I don't know the first thing about all this, but they say they do mail hosting for an extra fee.
What I'm not clear about is whether they will allow mail messages sent to the new domain email addy to be set up to be automatically forwarded straight to my existing @virgin.net mail account in Windows Live Mail. Anyone familiar with 123 know if this is possible and how easy please?

You don't need 123-reg hosting. Just register your domain and set up email forwarding to your Virgin email account.0

It's a piece of cake to set up forwarding.
There will be a "forwarding" page. Go to that and enter oblivion@newdomain.com in one box and oblivion@virgin.net in the other and you're done.
Emails sent to the new address will then magically appear in the inbox of the old one.
It can take up to 24 hours to propagate through the system but, in practice, it's more like 1-2 hours.0 -

Ah, ok thanks esuhl. I guess I would only need hosting if I also wanted to send emails using the new domain email addy.... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0 -

Excellent, even I can manage that.
My surname has been taken by most of the traditional .net, .uk, .com etc. But I've got my eye on an available domain MySurname.zone so I'll be able to create an email addy Dave@MySurname.zone
I quite like that.... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0 -

No - you should be able to use your ISP's SMTP server to send email using your new domain address. That's what I do (and I'm with 123-reg too). ISPs have clamped down on spammers, so you might need to register your new email address(es) with them so that they'll let you use their SMTP servers to send email from your domain.
You'd only need hosting if you wanted 123-reg to host your emails. But, you already have a Virgin.net address that stores your messages, so you can use that instead.
I have a free account with GMX.com (but you could probably use yahoo.co.uk, hotmail.com; any free email provider will do). I set up my domain (esuhl.co.uk) to forward messages to my free GMX account (user123@gmx.co.uk). Then I set my email client to use "me@esuhl.co.uk" as the sender address instead of the default "user123@gmx.co.uk").
Job done. I'm actually using the free user123@gmx.co.uk account, but people can send me email using me@esuhl.co.uk, when I reply, they see the sender as being me@esuhl.co.uk, and don't have any idea that I'm using a free GMX account for hosting.0 -
That's even better, thanks esuhl.... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0

UPDATE
Well that all went very smoothly. Got the domain name I wanted through 123-reg and it activated almost immediately. I've set up mail forwarding to my Virgin media account and tested that.
I've also set up a new account in Windows Live Mail using the settings for my existing account but adding the new domain's email addy to identify it and I can now send emails using Virgin's smtp server. What a great result.
Thanks for the help guys.... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0 -

Can I ask if you are able to send emails from your new domain when you are on your virgin wifi using something like outlook?
I have never managed to do this. I've also never managed to send virgin emails when on sky wifi.

The only thing which would prevent you from doing this is, that the Virgin SMTP server refuses to accept emails with a different email address than the Virgin address in the From: field.0 -

It is possible. It was a lot easier before spammers ruined the internet though - by peddling spam through non-discerning SMTP servers we all get inbox rubbish. I have never used virgin.net email, I use GMail, and it does allow an easy way to send 'From'. Virgin might offer a similar service, I suggest asking their tech support.0
