The gp was unconcerned. "At your size starvation isn't exactly an imminent worry now is it. Maybe next year but not today (insert laugh) as long as you drink plenty of water I'm more than sure your appetite will return with gusto! He then praised the lighter life diet, his wife lost 3 stones on it for their daughters wedding , maybe I could try that.
This is shockingly unprofessional. Presumably he is aware of your epilepsy, past eating disorder, and yet he said it would be ok for you to try a vlcd, literally laughed off your concerns about your health, and mocked your weight before suggesting you try another low calorie diet?
I'd put in a complaint about him to the practice and switch to another GP.

Its time you started eating properly again, but I think you already know that.

It might be an idea to get in touch with an eating disorder organisation, because as someone else said, your attitude to food seems to be all or nothing and Im aware you spoke about your childhood earlier.

You need support to manage your weight loss, that's clear. If I went to my GP to discuss my weight loss and decided I was going to starve myself Id get extremely short shrift.

The bottom line is, you need nutrients, you need fruit, veg, complex carbs even in small quantities, protein, minerals and vitamins.

I dont always manage it but I try for 6-7 portions of fruit and veg a day,

This is what you'll get from a cup a soup

    Energy (kJ) 152kJ 390kJ Energy (kcal) 36kcal 92kcal Protein 0.6g 1.6g Carbohydrate 6.6g 16.9g of which – sugars 2.6g 6.7g of which – starch

    Fat 0.7g 1.8g of which – saturates 0.5g 1.3g of which – mono-unsaturates

    of which – poly-unsaturates

of which – Trans Fatty Acids

    Fibre 0.4g 1.1g Sodium (g) 0.23g 0.59g Equivalent as Salt 0.58g 1.48g Ingredients

Ingredients as served (greatest first): Water, Tomato (33%), Potato, Maize Starch, Potato Starch, Glucose Syrup, Onion (1.1%), Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Basil (0.6%), Salt, Yeast Extract (contains Barley), Flavour Enhancers (Monosodium Glutamate, Disodium 5 -ribonucleotides), Emulsifier (Mono- and Diacetyl Tartaric Acid Esters of Fatty Acids), Stabiliser (Monopotassium Phosphate), Lactic Acid, Flavouring, Antioxidants (Ascorbyl Palmitate, Alpha-tocopherol). Colour (Curcumin).

Its processed rubbish, the fact that there are so many ingredients that you can't pronounce easily on the label is a sign that it's full of chemicals.

Your GP should be offering you a referral to either a gym or a weight management scheme.

I would definitely not be taking diet advice from a GP like that.

As for not being able to eat anything, are you sure it's physical and not mental? If it's really physical I would suggest eating bananas, crackers, plain rice. Just bland foods. When I had food poisoning (similar symptoms of not being able to keep food down) this is what I had when trying to introduce food.

I find the more you start to eat the more your appetite will come back, you just have to force yourself to eat even when you don't feel like it. your body is just rebelling at the lack of proper food.

Additional - regular soup is better than cup a soup, even the tinned ones, although fresh is obviously better! Cup A Soup as purpleshoes says is full of rubbish.

For somone of your height and weight, you should be eating around 1500 cals just to maintain your current weight (that would be if you basically lay in bed all day doing nothing which few people do)

Even 1800 cals a day should see you lose weight at your height and weight.

No wonder your body is rebelling on starvation rations, you probably arent eating 400 cals a day never mind 500.

Plus, what are you going to do if you do go out to eat or on holiday? The bowls of soup diet might be ok if you are cooking for yourself every day, go to a party, or away for the weekend, or to a friends house for a meal, it gets more difficult.

You need to find an eating plan that has flexibility built in and soup won't give you that.

I'm beginning to think this is some bizarre wind up. No one could be quite so (insert as appropriate) could they?

Im not sure it's a wind up, but no matter what advice is given, the OP it seems just wants to eat soup and never mind the consequences to her health.

Having to call a GP because you feel so unwell should be a major wake up call, I really don't think there's much point in people wasting any more energy commenting on this, because it seems like the OP is determined to eat 400 cals of soup and apples daily in her desire to lose weight, whether it's good for her or not.

When I went on holiday last summer I was around 12 stones and I wore a bikini, there was a woman next to me at the poolside who was massive. I didnt think anything of it, she was clearly confident enough to do that (wear a bikini).
When the OP started this thread, she was talking about herself as if she was 20 stones, not just over 14.

Im amazed that someone who really isn't that overweight is punishing her body and herself like this, because thats what this is, surviving on 3 cup a soups and 2 apples a day is punishment.

Even when I was losing weight and around 13 stones 10 or so, 2 stones down, I still went out, I went to the gym. No one made me feel like I shouldnt be out and about at that weight.

Its how you feel about yourself that matters. I know that weight gain can knock people's confidence, been there, but if you feel like its the end of the world at 89kgs and put yourself on a ridiculous restricted unhealthy cal controlled diet, Id say that there's more issues than just your weight.

I have asked for this thread to be closed.
It's clear that I have issues, and I have taken some helpful advice from this thread I really have and to those posters I thank you.
But to those of you who suggest I'm making it up or because YOU didn't feel the way I do when you weighed this much or that you weigh x or because you can eat this much and lose weight or go to a gym and feel wonderful and confident... So should I!

I hope your self importance and finger pointing has made you feel better about yourselves it certainly hasn't helped me any. If anything it's made me feel worse. But has probably reinforced how wonderful you feel you are.
I won't return to the thread but I will do what I need to do to be happy as would anyone. Thank you all for your contributions.

I would like to be healthy and slim but if i had to choose i'd rather be healthy than slim.

The ill feeling is likely the result of malnutrition. Although your body can burn fat as energy due to lack of food, it needs vitamins and minerals to operate properly. You would struggle to get enough from 400 calories worth of raw fruit and veg let alone cup a soups.
