Strange line has started to appear on TV - help needed!

Options
Hi guys

We have a 40" LG TV which is about 2-3 years old; in the last few weeks, the picture has developed a strange fault - about 6 inches from the right hand edge of the screen, a straight line down the screen has appeared and in this space, the picture is very flickery. The fault isn't always there and sometimes the flickering is worse than others.

We have Sky TV and a Sky+ Box.

Does the screen need repairing or could it be a fault with our Sky aerial or box?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you,
chessfan

If you can swap the box out for another one (old one, borrow one), then that will eliminate the box as a possible source of the fault. Or can you plug the TV into an aerial somewhere to test it via Freeview?
Sky doesn't use an aerial, it uses a dish, and it doesn't sound like a dish fault to me.

Thank you - just switched the TV on for the first time today and the picture is fine so all rather strange!

If it's a dry joint, then banging it will make it flicker.

2 to 3 years year old suggests dust. Unplug it, open up the back and hoover with a brush attachment. Cotton bud and iso-propyl alcohol (Maplins sells it) for stubborn bits.
  • Before checking for dust etc. may I suggest checking your lead, be it HDMI or scart.
In my experience, picture problems have been the cause of a fault developing on an HDMI cable which was an easy fix. ;)
I have also found the same in the past with a scart lead.

Easy to check, & less "hassle" if it IS the cause.

I have had a similar problem on an old tv I had (older than yours for sure). It turned out to be dead / dying pixels it got worse over time until it didn't fix itself. Fingers crossed one of the other suggestions above solves your problem.

    Hi,

You haven't stated the model number or whether it's a plasma or LCD screen so all I can do is direct you here:

Chances are high that it will become worse and more expensive to repair unless you get it fixed soon.
