Having sold a number of cars on Gumtree and Motors.co.UK be aware if you get a further email saying they want the car and that as they are housebound following an operation their agent will arrange collection after transfer of funds etc. I have had numerous replies like this and if you tell them to f off there is no response.
    Take care.

reading the message with txt inserts in it i would be surprised if they actually ever came and bought the car
i would prefer one to one phone contact so i could speak and tell them more about the car if they were actually interested

Thanks to everyone for all your comments and advice.

I have now amended my advert photos to show the number plate.

Hopefully I will get a decent price and have a smooth sale.

    Cheers.

Knowing the reg or not would make absolutely no difference to a scammer. Whereas a genuine buyer would possibly want to run an HPI check on the vehicle. If it is a scammer, giving him the reg will make no difference.

Nothing wrong with giving this info. Anyone can get the reg anyway just walking past your car.
Other than making it easy for any car cloner/ringer out there looking for your exact model to clone.

OR - and i know this might be hard for someone from the Conspiracy Brigade to take in - he could just have been a regular bloke looking a bit more info about a car he was looking to buy.

    Crazy eh?

I've no problem providing the info on request but there's no need to make it easy for the more unscrupulous types out there.

Do you put tinfoil over your number plates so noone can see your reg as you drive along then?

    No need to be facetious.

No cloner is going to sit on the side of his local road on the off-chance that the exact make/model/colour etc of car is going to roll conveniently by when he has the ability to sit in the comfort of his home searching the likes of Autotrader for the exact car miles away.

Travelling large distances for the right car at the right price is not uncommon.

Hes only asking for info that people can otherwise see every day on your car.

I sold my Golf (mk4, 2003 model) last year for £1800. The buyer travelled from Stoke on Trent to Kent to buy it so it isn't unheard of if it is a good example of a popular car.

Thanks, I understand that but is there any risk in me telling him the reg number?

Should I have left the reg number visible in the advert? I can easily upload replacement pictures showing it if there is no significant risk.

Personally I remove the plate from the photos but will give details on request so I'd leave it as is.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
