Keep the fan and ducting clean and the laptop should not overheat-as long as you don't use it on your lap.
Deal with the actual problem, not the symptoms.

what do you mean by the actual problem?

+1 . The only good buy from £land in the electronics section.
    Have you seen one?

They are designed for small lightweight notebooks. A regular laptop would crush it, they are tiny little things!

Why are you asking? Do you have a problem with your laptop getting a bit on the hot side?

I'm sorry, I don't quite get questions such as you have asked, without a mention of the problem that you may or may not have. If you have a problem, please give details. If you want a debate, please say so.
The problem is: do laptops need a cooler? I'm not really sure why you are confused. If my laptop gets hot, and it does if i'm running a game (around 50 degrees C according to a diagnostic programme i use called Speccy) then am I at risk of habing it prematurely meltdown? Is 50 degrees too much or nothing to worry about?

I err on the side of caution with my lap top,it may not have cost a lot but for a few pounds I hope that unlike the first one I bought that only lasted a few months through overheating the cost to me is worth it.
OK it might be a gimmick but since investing in the cooling tray I can run mine for hours and it stays cool.
This is what I'm trying to find out, but unfortunately some people on here see fit to troll for some reason. While the others are very helpful and to whom I remain grateful, I find the attitudes of some totally perplexing.

As I said caution is the way I look at things {but perhaps being a silver surfer guides me that way}. You pay a lot for your lap top/PC but then people moan or say why should I pay for xyz or no I cannot be bothered to do a back up of my Hard drive then sometime down the line those same people are bemoaning the fact that the H/D has failed or some other problem that could have been prevented.
My cooling tray cost me about £20 and the lap top was around £200 so for me the cost was well worth it in the long run. Having the lap top on my lap gets uncomfortable due to the warmth without it so the small investment was worth it. Yes it may be a gimmick but for me it works others think it is a waste of money so in the end only you can decide and good luck whatever you choose :0).

This is not what your original question was. I am not a mind reader. Why did you not put all the relevant info in your first post?

Are these devices worthwhile or even necessary?

If so does anyone have any solid and reasonably priced recommendations? Thanks

    Just saving this.

"Laptop" is a name that should never have been applied to the devices. They are not designed to run without space enough under them to allow cooling air to be drawn in through the fan and exhausted through the vents. How do you use yours? - They are best used on a hard surface such as a table. A laptop stand definitely helps. Ours is a HP Dv7 Pavilion, almost 6 years old and always used on either a table or the desk, with an inclined stand. It has never overheated and is used daily, for long periods when our granddaughter is here (She is using it as I type this on my desktop)

I know of a lady neighbour whose laptop overheated, due to using it either on her lap with a folded towel under it "To keep the heat off my lap" - or on a table, on top of 2 folded table cloths. I managed to reinstall everything when it blew its top, after stripping it and cleaning out solid, compacted fibres and dust.

By all means use it on your lap, but put a hard surface (tea tray or similar) on your lap. Best of all, use it on a table or desk with a proper laptop stand under it. Laptop coolers are a waste of time and money, they actually waste power and computer resources because they work from a USB port on the laptop. They are unnecessary: if you have clear vents and fan intake, and use it on a hard surface with air passing beneath it, it will be fine.

The computer's biggest enemies - heat, fibres and dust.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

    This/\/\/\

If your laptop is running too hot/overheating then it needs to be cleaned out and the fans repaired if they are at fault. I only use a laptop tray to keep the underside ventilation clear and have never had a problem.

I feel like we are having 2 different conversations:

all I asked was whether cooling pads worked and if so what are good recommendations.

I have never professed expertise in the hardware so your question confuses me.
