Are these devices worthwhile or even necessary?
If so does anyone have any solid and reasonably priced recommendations? Thanks

Depends. Heat is the killer of motherboards and CPU's. If you are generally surfing and watching YouTube then is doesn't matter too much. If you are gaming on a laptop then anything that elevates and airs the underside of a laptop will help. Also most laptop stands elevate the keyboard to a more comfortable position.
I have one of these: http://www.ebuyer.com/140685-belkin-laptop-cooling-stand-white-f5l001er
The fan does get noisy as it ages as the bearings start to age/wear. If I were to replace is I would probably get this:

are they any different from the Poundland item (probably last longer i guess)? Do they really make any practical difference?
Surely laptops are designed to deal with heat - within reason.0 -
They might sidestep symptoms but not solve a problem. Laptops can run hot through choice of processor, animal hair, poor ventilation or design. I had an i7 HP laptop that you could almost burn your hand on and now have an i5 mobile one that's a bit slower but near-silent and cool.
Powering a fan from the USB port isn't going to help a lot - 1) 5v500mA is not going to shift a whole heap of air and 2) it'll actually increase the heat inside the case.0 -
Keep the fan and ducting clean and the laptop should not overheat-as long as you don't use it on your lap.
Deal with the actual problem, not the symptoms. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

I err on the side of caution with my lap top,it may not have cost a lot but for a few pounds I hope that unlike the first one I bought that only lasted a few months through overheating the cost to me is worth it.
OK it might be a gimmick but since investing in the cooling tray I can run mine for hours and it stays cool.0 -

Why are you asking? Do you have a problem with your laptop getting a bit on the hot side?
I'm sorry, I don't quite get questions such as you have asked, without a mention of the problem that you may or may not have. If you have a problem, please give details. If you want a debate, please say so.0
