Hi MayfieldGirl,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. A lot of posters have suggested various things, which seem to have done nothing other than complicating things. So, let me see if I can simplify the whole process, and get things up and running.
If you plug in a Network Cable between your laptop and your Sky Router, it should automatically request an IP address from the router, and also a gateway that it uses as a path to the internet. You can check this as follows:-
Click Start then Run and type cmd. A black screen appears. type ipconfig and press enter. You should see three pieces of information.
IPv4 Address 192.168.0.x where x is a number from 2 to 255
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 or something along those lines.
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1 in the case of the Sky Router.
If any of these pieces of info are not correct in your case, then post again and I will take you through another step which you need to check.
Assuming you have these three pieces of info correct, then type in the black window the following, ping 216.258.210.35 which is the IP address for google.co.uk. You should get a screen that says it has sent four packets, and if all is well your computer has received four packets. Make sure there is a space between ping and the IP address.
At this point if all is well move onto the next step, if not, then you will need to repost and I will take you through what you need to check at this point.
If all is well up to now, then type in the black window the following, ping google.co.uk. You should get a screen that says it has sent four packets, and if all is well your computer has received four packets. At this point if all is well, your computer is correctly setup for internet access and when you open a browser you should be able to load all the pages you want.

Apologies for not responding sooner Simon and thank you for the detailed suggestions. I will try tomorrow after work.
Also, I've got the USB adaptor but can't install via the disc as it says to connect to the internet in order to complete the installation!
Beginning to wish I'd never started now!0
