Will I incur a late payment fee, MBNA?

Hello,

I was told by my father to make a payment on his MBNA credit card before the due date which is 05/04/2015. I only realised today that I didn't make it and just quickly rang MBNA (8PM) and made the payment. On the phone the gentleman said it should be cleared by 08/04/2015. I believe that this will mean my father will incur a late payment fee. Is this correct? I would have thought that telephone payments made by a debit card would take 2 working days to clear. I also understand that there is an upcoming bank holiday, but still I would have presumed that this payment would me made cleared by 05/04/2015 as I'm still giving 2 days for it to clear? Any advice is appreciated.

You have 2 bank holidays and the weekend coming up so the next working day is Tuesday the 7th. 2 working days to clear will take you to the 8th.

Oops!! How did I not realise there are 2 bank holidays??? I guess the gentleman on the phone was correct then, and my father will incur a late payment fee. :(

You should have paid by a bank transfer that normally clears faster than a debit card payment.
It's not late yet to make an extra minimum payment (that your father should have arranged to be taken by a DD to avoid unforeseen problems).

Would it be possible to do that from my own debit account instead of my fathers debit account? Thank you :)

You can do this from any current (not 'debit') account. See instructions on the back of the CC bill. Don't forget to put the long CC number as a reference.

Thank you very much for your help. I've just sent a payment to MBNA through my current account using the faster payment system, which I didn't know existed. It said it should make the payment within 2 hours, which means the credit card should be made clear :)

Even if you made a faster payment now, it still wouldn't clear until 8/4/15 as it's outside their hours.

Oh no, I failed to see that!! I guess MBNA has made a profit then. It's upsetting to see how these banks are ripping the public off. I'm in the wrong, but they shouldn't be this harsh with the time restrictions as well!

It's always worth calling and asking, especially when there are two bank holidays in a row. Often CC companies easily refund occasional fees if the account is normally managed well.
One of my CCs (with a small limit) twice refunded the accidental overlimit fee after I made payments the next day to get back under the limit.

Thank you, unfortunately I wont be making that call to MBNA as my father thinks its already paid off. I don't really wish to tell him either that he will incur a late payment as he's been in hospital for over a month. Here's hoping that they won't charge me a missing late fee.
