Very poor service, can I pay less?

I had a blinds company come and measure up for new blinds.

After 3 weeks, they made and fitted them, but they draw the opposite way I asked, and it took another 10 days and several phone calls and arguing to get them to manufacture them again the way I had asked.

Yesterday they came to fit the correct ones, but they have installed them wrongly, they do not close one way, due to a fitting error. So they are coming this afternoon to re-fit them.

I am annoyed because:

I now I have extra holes around my window that need to be filled, but it is wallpaper so impossible to do perfectly.

I have had to place around ten phone calls to them over this last month.

I have had to wait in for four days waiting for them to come and fix the problems, fit, re-fit etc.

Am I within my rights withhold some of the money? They wanted £340, I paid £100 deposit. So £240 is due. I feel like knocking £40 off to cover the wall repair I need to do, the numerous call costs, time wasted and the general inconvenience.

What does anyone think about doing this?

Thanks.

Hi, we move threads if we think they’ll get more help elsewhere (please read the forum rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board. If you have any questions about this policy please email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

I’ve moved your thread from the ‘In my home’ board to the ‘Praise, Vent & Warnings’ board, where it is better suited.

Have you actually asked them to rectify the damage?

No, the holes are in wallpaper, they won't be able to repair properly. And if they have made this mess and then left it, and not managed to do such a simple task in the first place then I'm not keen on having them do anything else to the house really. Don't fancy waiting in a 5th day for them to rock up either.

Just would like to know if it is reasonable and within my rights to withhold part of the payment?

    I think the word I'm looking for is . . . negotiation.

Simply withholding part payment could end up in a small claims court particularly if you don't allow them to rectify the issues. How big are these irreparable holes?

I just came here to make a blind man joke, but I don't think I'll bother.

Yes it's possible let bit make sure you negotiate first. I had a load of messing around with a blinds company when they did our conservatory roof. They sent a guy round who gave up because he wasn't trained properly and the second fitter left swarf everywhere which was especially bad since we have a toddler running round. They knocked off £50 after an irate call to the boss.
