Im not thick. I have bought a clearing disc from a trusted PC shop. This will completely delete any browsing history and bank and card details from the hard drive, it cost £11 which is much cheaper than getting a IT tech to do a manual hard drive wipe.

You did not need to buy anything as a free utility called DBan does the job, followed by re-installing the Operating System (OS).
Refer to this Reddit thread, which explains the method.

Why would you need an IT tech to do a manual hard drive wipe? You can do that yourself for nothing. But you don't want to to wipe the hard drive manually, because that will remove the OS and reduce it's sale value-just do a normal Factory Restore.
Your 'clearing disk' is probably nothing more than a couple of freely downloadable utilities copied to CD. And removing your browser history and cookies is done from the browser menu, no need for 3rd party tools.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Dude, this lass doesn't even know if she will lose her facebook account if she uses another computer - do you really expect her to be tech-geeky enough to use DBAN?
