Why do you want them on-line, if the company goes tits-up you loose all your photos.
Some of the hard drive vendors provide a 'my cloud' service where you can access your hard drive(s) across the world.
Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring

What are you planning on doing with them? Just storing them or showing them off?

Personally I use dropbox or I have used personal hosting.

The alternative is to use an external hard drive. Then set up remote access to your computer so your able to log into your computer from another computer / mobile and access your photos.
A bit tricky, but least you can store more without paying out cloud subscriptions.

An external drive is not an alternative. If you get burgled and the computer equipment is taken, or the building burns down, floods, or experiences something detrimental to computers, then what?
An additional storage platform in another location with remote access might be, but that's essentially what you're getting with Dropbox etc.

Only if you don't have copies elsewhere.

The new Apple Photos service, for example, has an option to download full or reduced resolution copies, with all metadata, to one or more other machines. So my current setup (requires iOS 8.latest and OSX 10.10.3, currently in beta) is that when I take a picture using my iPhone it goes to the iCloud service, and is then immediately downloaded, in full resolution, to one machine at home and one machine in the office, and in reduced resolution to my laptop (which doesn't have as much storage). When I take a photograph with another camera and load it onto one of the machines, it's rapidly available on all the others.

I haven't yet figured out what happens to full resolution pictures loaded onto the laptop: are they replaced with the lower resolution copy that would be downloaded were I to have done the initial load on another machine, or do they stay in full resolution because it's available? But as a minimum, I have three full resolution copies of everything (Cloud plus two desktops) within a few minutes.

Leaving aside the slight implausibility of Apple going bust without ample warning, I've got two copies under my physical control. What's not to like?

  • You can get 30Gb for free with Microsoft Onedrive if you turn on photo uploads (you can turn it off again later). If you get someone to refer you then you can get a little bit extra storage forever. It works the same way as Dropbox.

I backup a low quality copy in Google photos and full resolution copy in Onedrive. This happens automatically from both my laptop and my mobile devices...

    A good point.

I keep a hard drive in my locker at work. This way I can transfer 500GB in the boot of my car in 20mins. Probably faster than my fibre connection

[STRIKE]i've moved loads of folders (which include photos and documents) to Dropbox and have logged in via another computer. the folders are there, but there's nothing in them.

there are no bad files in the Incompatible Files and Folders check on Dropbox

    where have i gone wrong?

[STRIKE]oh, just checked via the original computer and they don't appear there (on Dropbox) either!!! but they are in the Dropbox file on the PC.[/STRIKE]
    [/STRIKE]

figured they might still be syncing, but it's a bit worrying when the folders appear but there's nothing in them! :D

forget all that! lol, worked it out now - apparently I have 41 hours of syncing remaining!!! :D will it restart if I have to shut the PC down? :rotfl:
