Store card problem from 2009!

I paid off lots of cards back in 2009 and closed the accounts. I thought that was the end of it until I recently checked my credit report. I found my Argos card still said I owe money! I arranged a final payment with their debt collection agency Moorcroft in 2009 and presumed the account was closed. Having spoken to Argos and written to them they are adamant I still owe the money as it was only a partial payment. They have never chased me for the money, sent me statements or sent me any correspondence to tell me I still owe the money. They will not alter my credit file! I have spoken also to Moorcroft who no longer hold my details.
What can I do next? If I pay the balance now it will look bad on my credit file as I have owed the money for so long.

Is a default showing on your credit file for this?I'm a Board Guide on the Credit Cards, Loans, Credit Files & Ratings boards. I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly, and I can move and merge threads there. Any views are mine and not the official line of moneysavingexpert.com0

I've just looked into it - it will drop off my credit file in September which is 6yrs after. Thanks for your help.0

If you have a letter from Moorcroft confirming full and final settlement use that with Argos Financial Services to challenge it. If not, just leave it. The default goes after six years as mentioned above, but provided you do not admit to owing the money, or make any payments, then the creditor cannot take legal action six years after the last payment/admission. That is statute barred.
If you are confident that your payment to Moorcroft was full and final you could call and ask them to confirm it - I would expect they will still have details.0
