Finally, it's not BMW that you suspect of "trying it on", it's a franchised distributor of BMW cars, basically a bunch of people who only care about extracting money.

As against BMW themselves, who are not in business to make money?

It would be common practice of a garage to advise if the pads were unlikely to make it to the next service without needing changed.

Also, when they're down to their markers they could well be past peak efficiency without being illegal.

Conversely, how would you feel if in say another 2,000 miles the brake pad warning light came on? Would you be on here saying "oh car just serviced, why didnt they pick that up??"

But that is not what they have advised. If they had said the pads have a couple of k left on them, they won't make it to next service. That would make more sense. I would ahve said thank you and then in 1500 miles booked the car in for pads to be done.

But that is not what they said. They just said they need doing and would book the car in for next week.

They rarely put a timescale on remaining wear as it will vary on driving style.

Its up to you really. Your local garage are likely to let them run closer to the limiter and also use non genuine parts.

name and shame the dealer please

Reading the responses it is quite possible there is some lack of understanding on my part about what assurance an MOT provides.

I will get another opinion at the weekend and see what they say. I will post back either way.
  • Hang on just a second before 'naming and shaming' a dealer. A tester is not obliged to advise you on your MOT, if it passes the brake test and inspection the tester is happy - don't treat your MOT like a service, it's nothing more than an extremely basic safety check of certain items for certain defects. Your pads could be metal to metal 100 miles after an MOT and it would be irrelevant.

The dealer will have inspected your car with the assumption they will not see it again for potentially 2 years or ~18k miles, and advised you accordingly. If your not happy get a 2nd opinion, but just beacause your MOT didn't flag any failures doesn't mean that no preventative or routine maintenance is required. Likewise if you don't think you will do enough mileage to wear the pads out, politely refuse the work and get it done when the warning light comes on.

I've only had positive experiences and heard of many good things from BMW Reading. I know the master tech who works there, his a fellow named Kevin whose very knowledgably and a BMW enthusiast himself.

Is that where you have the M3 serviced?

I think that you are putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5.

I think we need more information here.

As said, unless the pads are virtually metal to metal they will pass an MOT and the tester is not obliged to say anything at all.

OK so last year you had an advisory about pads, but that doesn't mean that you can rely on always getting such an advisory.

Which pads were renewed last year? - you say one set - so was it front or rear?

Surely they are not saying that the pads that were replaced last year need to be replaced again?

Is it not more likely that it is now the pads on the other axle?

What is the total mileage now at 5 years old?
