Half the times I've moved I've had to get BT Openreach out for one thing or another in order to get my phone line and broadband sorted out regardless of how much notice I've given my provider and there being a working phone line in the property. In one instance I'm pretty confident that EE had one of my neighbour's phone lines cut off. Oops.

Just make sure you do it after you exchange.

My buyer cut my phone off on the date he had planned to move in. Then had a hissy fit and pulled out on what was supposed to be exchange day.

Leaving me with no phone line as I could not get it reinstated without taking out a new 12 month contract or something, I can't remember now it was 8 years ago, but it was a bloody nightmare anyway!

We've exchanged so definitely are commited to the purchase. In fact, we had our pre-completion wander last night with the vendor to know where assorted things are.
When we sold/purchased in December we set up our internet (new provider, Virgin) as soon as we'd exchanged (eleven days before completion) and it was up and running a week after we completed..

That's helpful phoebe1989, thank you. I need to be able to access internet asap for work and can't imagine waiting 3 weeks for it - that'd be a nightmare. That said, I don't want to mess anything up.

Was your sale dependant on a mortgage? (Potential pre-completion checks are what are causing me to hesitate).
Hard to know what to do.

    Cheeky bump....
  • We're due to complete next friday having already concluded missives (scottish equivalent of excahnge) but I am not going to book in anything like sky, internet etc until I have the keys.

My purchase is mortgage dependent and I don't want to be messing about taking out credit accounts or being checked for stuff before my mortgage funds are in place, just in case the lender does a final credit check.

Thank you glasgowgirl80. I organised building insurance on exchange which will inevitably have meant a check, but perhaps I'll leave it there until we're in. All we've done so far is arrange tv license move, car insurance, phone relevant utilities to say we're moving but not assigned anything 'bills' to the new house as yet.

    What's a pre-completion wander? Sounds interesting!

I just wanted to figure out where to put things because I'll have to make it clear to the removal company. I also wanted to know where relevant meters were and how alarms worked. I know there are probably manuals etc. but the last thing I'll have the time to do is read them.

It's quite easy to forget how the sizes of the rooms feel between viewing and completion.

The vendors are very pleasant though and really helpful.

    Slightly related.

We have moved x4 times in the same town, and managed to keep the same tel. no. However you have to be with BT in order to transfer your no. And being a moneysaver, we have been with other providers, however, 2 months before moving we switched to BT in order to keep our no....
