The MOT tester I use stopped checking the spare a few years ago as it's no longer a test requirement. Just swap them over and they should do a partial retest.0

I am always in disbelief at people who present cars to mot with worn tyres or blown bulbs, the easiest things to ensure are mot passes.
To be fair, bulbs can fail at any time including on the way to the test. But, in general, totally agree and would add wiper blades and washer fluid to the list0 -
I was in that same situation a few years back.
They changed the wheel over and passed the car without charging me to do it.0 -
Why you would take you car for the rather basic annual MOT with a tyre on or close to the legal limit anyway?
Such basic checks should be done regularly throughout the year.
A worn tyre doesn't happen overnight.
A bit like putting oil in after then engine seizes isn"t it?0 -
If it's a full sized alloy wheel the same size as the other tyre on that axle they should pass it after a partial retest.
If it's a different size or space saver it will fail as it has a temporary wheel fitted0 -
The guy can't just stop the test to change the wheel. He'd need to do a pre-MOT check or fail then partial retest immediately after.
Changing it in front of the tester is also not a problem. So long as it's presented to them in a roadworthy manner.
But a tyre is either legal or it isn't - no its on the limit but will fail0 -
A small thing that might be of interest. A tester can do a repair after the test is done, all while still having the car logged in for its initial mot.
It is usually used for such instances like fitting a tyre, or a bulb, wiper even a track rod end etc.0 -

I didn't know they'd changed it, it used to be a strange one, without a spare you'd pass, with an illegal spare you'd fail. Back in the day (20 years ago) people used to take their 'get you home' very worn spare out for the MOT and put it back in later on that day.0 -
Afaia, spares have never been testable, no matter what urban myth said about them.0
