If you have an MOT and one of the tyres will pass for just being worn out, on the legal limit,

so it fails due to this tyre and they fail it there and then,

Then if you have a spare tyre in your boot which is brand new, and working fine,

can they fit that one, in front of you, which you have supplied,

and then pass the MOT?

(even if you fit it yourself, infront of them/ or on the side) ?

or they would likely fail it, and tell you to come back another day?

or if they are lenient they might not fail you, they will replace it with your tyre, and then pass you after it is changed, with the new tyre.

(I know it depends how lenient the MOT tester is, but lets just say in the best case)

and has this happened to you? in a similar form? what happened, and what was your story ??

Also If they fit them, how much extra would they typically charge for fitting them ?? (approx) ??

    IIRC

if the spare tyre is present it then needs to be in a roadworthy condition. therefore the MOT would still be a fail on the state of the spare if it was switched with the "failed" tyre.
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow.. :p

If the Spare tyre is in good condition (with no faults)

and switched by them, (with a good tyre)- then would it fail ??

I don't think the spare tyre is tested during the mot.

Op If you've got a good spare tyre why are you driving on a worn tyre?.

Me neither. My spare is in a right state, I can't believe the tester looks at it.
  • If the spate is good then you'll need to ask the garage to fit it before the MOT.

    The manual says:

"This inspection applies to tyres fitted to the road wheels only. The vehicle presenter should be informed when it is noticed that there is a defective tyre on a spare wheel."

If the tyre 'will pass' then the question is irrelevant. It either has the legal minimum of tread on it or it does not. If the spare is legal, fit it and MOT it with the 'old' spare removed.
Regardless of the MOT, you are taking risks with your own safety and that of others by driving with a tyre with such inadequate tread on it.

Spare tyre is not[/i part of the MOT test and the car can't be failed regardless of its condition. A tester can (and should) give an advisory if he notices that it's faulty.

They're not allowed to do any repairs (including changing a tyre) during the test so, in the situation you gave, they would have to finish the test and fail it before putting the spare on.

Whether or not they're willing to change it after the test and issue an immediate pass is entirely up the the garage. They can if they want, but they don't have to. Similarly, they can let you change it then pass it if they want but they may have insurance issues over that because you'll be doing work on their premises.

Once the tyre's changed they'll do a partial retest and (hopefully) pass it. Whether they can do that "on the spot" or ask you to come back another day (or later the same day) usually depends entirely on how busy they are.

The MOT limit is the same as the legal limit. Three points, or a fail? Thank the MOT man... and make a mental note to check your tyres more often in future.

If the spare is a full-size tyre, same size as the ones on, then fit it - in fact, why wasn't it already on? But if it's a space-saver temporary spare, then it'll fail on that, regardless of condition.

Spares are never, ever part of the MOT - no matter how manky or deflated or bald. But if you then put an illegal spare on the car, that's illegal, MOT regardless.

I've had an advisory for a bald spare tyre that would have been a definite fail of it was on a road wheel.
On that basis It would be ok, as long as they were able to retest after you had changed it, but then get an advisory.
I am always in disbelief at people who present cars to mot with worn tyres or blown bulbs, the easiest things to ensure are mot passes.
