John Lewis asking for payment 2 months after 'transaction'.

Has anyone come across this before?

I placed an order online at JohnLewis.com at the end of January and received the goods the next day after my debit card payment was seemingly accepted.
I have received an emil this week saying the payment has not been processed and that I now owe £189.
I thought the payment had been processed back then, so having to fork out now kind of feels like an unexpected item to have to pay for.

I guess i shall have to pay though. Just wondering if there might be a consumer rights thing I am missing? Long shot I know!

No, your not missing anything consumer rights related. You owe the money as it didn't go through, no tricks to get out of it. Of course you could let them do it the hard way through the courts, but in the end that will just cost you courts fees too.

Do you not check your bank statements? If you didn't notice this, what else could you have missed?
  • Hi,

you'd have noticed if you had been charged twice.
  • I'd also love to find out if I have any consumer rights that allow me to wriggle out of paying for my shopping.

Mistakes happen, you've received an item that hasn't been paid for so do the right thing.

You owe the money, so pay it. Do you want JL to pursue you through the Courts for it? You'll end up paying a whole lot more and it may affect your credit worthiness for several years. If JL had taken the money twice would you expect it back after you noticed two months later?

You could ask them, if they would accept payment over 2 or 3 months, if you are going to struggle to pay it in one hit.

Although they could refuse, as they have up to 6 years IIRC to claim payment and only after 6 months IIRC, they would have to accept payment over a reasonable period of time.

Surely you would have an extra £189 in your account, unless you havent had any other big spends.

A lot of people probably wouldn't. You just assume that the money has been taken!

I certainly notice if something has been taken that I didn't expect!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

You don't have to pay if you don't want to...

... you can always return a completely sealed new item to them ;) (usually anyway!)
