You don't have to pay if you don't want to...

... you can always return a completely sealed new item to them ;) (usually anyway!)

Although 2 months later may be pushing the limits of their returns policy...

You have to pay for what you bought. However, alert the bank to ensure that 2 payments do not go through.
Paying for something you buy is not only legal it is ethical as well.
  • Let them take you to court and offer to pay a penny a month as settlement.

Then, off curse, do not apply for a new mortgage!

I would be surprised if they would take the op to court over such a small sum....

If i was the op i would ignore them for a month or so and get a feel for how much they are prepared to do for it.

I am one of the people that would also not really notice if payment had been taken or not. Only people who live hand to mouth check their statements all the time :D

Judging by what I've read on MSE the exact opposite is the case.

hence the "usually anyway!" part ;)
  • I f they had taken 2 payments instead you could have had a long wait before receiving your money back, big firms are notorious or delays when they have your money.
I would offer them a fiver a month

I sympathise with you here! I don't check my statements anywhere near as much as I should and would also just assume it was paid unless I heard otherwise.

Best just being honest and saying look I thought it was taken and don't really have the money and ask about paying it up. John Lewis customer service are pretty good.
